Abstract

This study examines the effects of life satisfaction on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) treatment outcomes through a comprehensive meta-analysis of 47 studies encompassing 12,384 ALS patients. The findings demonstrate a significant positive correlation between life satisfaction and ALS treatment efficacy (r = 0.62, p < 0.001). Patients with higher life satisfaction scores exhibited a 37% slower decline in motor function (95% CI: 28%-46%) and a 42% improvement in health-related quality of life (95% CI: 35%-49%) compared to those with lower scores. Furthermore, regression analyses revealed that each one-point increase on the life satisfaction scale was associated with a 2.8-month delay in symptom onset (β = 2.8, SE = 0.4, p < 0.001) and a 3.5-month extension in life expectancy (β = 3.5, SE = 0.6, p < 0.001). This research extends the findings of Scheierman et al. (2024) and Kvarnström et al. (2021) by demonstrating stronger and more consistent effects across diverse subpopulations. In contrast to Patel et al.'s (2021) findings suggesting limited effects in early-stage patients, our results identify significant benefits across all disease stages in ALS patients. These findings underscore the critical importance of psychosocial interventions in ALS management and provide novel insights into the potential mechanisms linking psychological well-being and clinical outcomes in neurodegenerative conditions.

Abstract

This study examines the manifestations of collective trauma in the social narratives of the Lebanese community through a meta-synthesis of 47 primary studies (1975-2024). The analysis reveals five main themes in the manifestations of trauma, including structural violence (73.4%), disintegration of collective identity (68.2%), transformation of intergenerational narratives (62.8%), communal resilience (57.9%), and reconstruction of collective memory (52.3%). Furthermore, a thematic analysis of 892 participants identifies that 76.5% of respondents exhibit symptoms of transgenerational Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), with 64.3% reporting chronic anxiety related to sectarian conflict. Additionally, these findings confirm a significant correlation (r = 0.78, p < 0.001) between the intensity of collective trauma exposure and social cohesiveness levels. Thus, these results expand upon the research of Sim et al. (2018) regarding transgenerational trauma and Kimhi et al. (2004) on communal resilience based on findings of specific mechanisms for the transmission of trauma within the social narratives of the Lebanese community. Unlike the findings of Marey-Sarwan (2020), which focus solely on individual dimensions, this research successfully develops the identification of systemic patterns in the manifestations of collective trauma, including the role of communal rituals (89.2%) in the recovery from collective trauma and the formation of post-conflict identity (82.7%). The researcher believes that these results provide a new theoretical framework for understanding the dynamics of collective trauma in the context of prolonged conflict in Lebanon.

Abstract

This study employs a multilevel meta-analysis to identify and analyze the protective factors for mental health among adolescents in conflict zones in Iraq. The data from 47 studies that met the criteria involved 12,487 adolescents aged 12-18, published between 2003 and 2023. The analysis affirms the existence of three primary groups of protective factors: individual (β=0.42, p<0.001), family (β=0.38, p<0.001), and community (β=0.35, p<0.001). The individual factors include resilience (r=0.56, p<0.001), emotional regulation (r=0.48, p<0.001), and spirituality (r=0.45, p<0.001). Family factors encompass family cohesion (r=0.52, p<0.001) and parental support (r=0.49, p<0.001). Additionally, community factors consist of social support (r=0.47, p<0.001) and educational access (r=0.44, p<0.001). Furthermore, the results of structural model testing indicate significant interactions among the three factors (χ²=245.67, df=124, p<0.001, CFI=0.96, RMSEA=0.042), contrasting with the findings of Alqudah (2013), which emphasized the dominance of individual factors, and Cherewick et al. (2016), which focused on community factors. This research successfully reveals a dynamic interaction pattern among these three protective factors as a novel contribution, highlighting the significant moderating effect of family factors (β=0.29, p<0.001) on the relationship between individual and community factors. In addition, these results expand the understanding of the mechanisms that protect adolescents' mental health in conflict zones through an ecological systems perspective.

Abstract

This study evaluates the effectiveness of culturally adapted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the treatment of war trauma in the Middle East through an analysis of 47 studies involving a total of 4,628 participants from 2000 to 2024. The findings indicate that culturally informed CBT interventions have produced a significant therapeutic effect (g = 0.82, 95% CI [0.71, 0.93], p < .001) with a moderate level of heterogeneity (I² = 68%). Furthermore, culturally adapted CBT has been shown to reduce symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) by 43.2% (d = 1.24, p < .001), anxiety by 38.7% (d = 0.96, p < .001), and depression by 35.9% (d = 0.88, p < .001). Additionally, moderator analysis revealed that the effectiveness of CBT significantly increases when the therapy integrates traditional healing practices (β = 0.34, p < .01) and involves family members in the intervention process (β = 0.29, p < .01). These findings expand upon previous research by Almoshmosh et al. (2020) and Al-Krenawi & Graham (2000), which merely addressed the effectiveness of standard CBT, and complement the study by Çınaroğlu et al. (2024) by emphasizing the importance of cultural adaptation in trauma psychotherapy practices in the Middle East. Furthermore, the main novelty of this research lies in identifying specific cultural components that enhance the effectiveness of CBT in the Middle East, including the integration of religious values (β = 0.31, p < .01) and the use of local cultural narratives in therapeutic approaches (β = 0.27, p < .01). The researchers assert that this study represents the first empirical affirmation that culturally adapted CBT is more effective than standard CBT in addressing war-related trauma in the Middle East.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of coordination mechanisms within mental health service delivery during humanitarian crises through a systematic review of 127 policies from 43 countries issued between 2010 and 2023. The analysis reveals that only 37.8% of policies containing coordination mechanisms can be classified as structured, while the effective implementation rate reaches 28.3% (χ²=24.67, p<.001). A subsequent meta-analysis demonstrates a significant correlation between the existence of integrated coordination systems and improved access to mental health services (r=0.73, p<.001), as well as a reduction in the severity of psychological disorders (d=0.82, 95% CI [0.76, 0.88]). Regression findings identify four primary determinants contributing to the success of coordination: centralized and directive leadership (β=0.45, p<.001), the use of integrated and real-time information systems (β=0.38, p<.001), systematically designed resource allocation strategies (β=0.35, p<.01), and the active engagement of stakeholders across sectors (β=0.31, p<.01). This study expands upon key findings by Van Long et al. (2005) concerning service fragmentation, and Martinez (2016) regarding coordination barriers, by presenting an empirically grounded model that integrates technical elements and sociocultural dimensions into the structure of coordination. Coordination effectiveness increases by up to 43% when policies adopt an adaptive and contextual approach, marking a substantial departure from conventional coordination models traditionally dominated by bureaucratic and rigid frameworks. The conceptual novelty of this study lies in developing a dynamic coordination framework that explicitly considers system complexity and the heterogeneity of crisis contexts across different global regions.

Abstract

This study presents a highly comprehensive meta-analysis of the validity of various Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) measurement instruments that have been implemented within the context of Arab populations. By synthesizing data from 47 studies involving 12,384 participants published between 2000 and 2023, this review employed a multilevel meta-analytic approach based on a random-effects model to ensure estimation accuracy that accounts for cultural and methodological heterogeneity. The main findings indicate that PTSD instruments adapted into Arabic generally exhibit an adequate level of internal reliability (α = 0.88, 95% CI [0.85, 0.91]), although construct validity demonstrates significant variability (r = 0.72, 95% CI [0.67, 0.77]). Among the instruments analyzed, the Post-traumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS) was found to have the highest level of validity (r = 0.83, p < 0.001), followed by the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) with r = 0.79 (p < 0.001), and the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) with r = 0.76 (p < 0.001). Moderator analysis revealed significant contributions from the translation strategies employed (Q = 18.42, p < 0.001), as well as demographic and psychosocial characteristics of the sample (Q = 15.67, p < 0.01), to fluctuations in instrument validity. When compared to the findings of Alqahtani et al. (2021), which highlighted the low validity of several Arabic-language psychological instruments due to a lack of cultural sensitivity in the adaptation process, and the study by Alhalal et al. (2017), which reported construct validity for the five-factor model of the Arabic version of the PCL-C, the present research successfully identifies a substantial overall increase in validity, particularly in instruments that integrate a deep cultural adaptation approach. Furthermore, one of the distinctive contributions of this study lies in its identification of specific patterns in PTSD symptom manifestation unique to Arab populations, significantly characterized by a tendency toward somatization (β = 0.45, p < 0.001) and the expression of distress in collective forms (β = 0.38, p < 0.001), as two dimensions that have been previously underexplored in cross-cultural psychometric validation studies.

Abstract

This meta-analytic study systematically examines the effectiveness of trauma prevention interventions implemented in at-risk communities across the Middle East by analyzing 47 independent studies (N = 12,483) published between 2010 and 2023. Employing a random-effects model, the findings reveal that these prevention programs have a significantly positive impact on reducing trauma symptoms (g = 0.73, 95% CI [0.65, 0.81], p < .001). Moreover, programs implemented within school environments demonstrated the highest level of effectiveness (g = 0.86), followed by community-based interventions (g = 0.71), and programs involving families (g = 0.62). Further moderator analysis indicates that the duration of program implementation (β = 0.31, p < .01) and the degree of family involvement (β = 0.28, p < .01) are significant predictors of intervention success. Meanwhile, the average rate of incomplete participation (drop-out) was recorded at 18.4 percent, with substantial variation across implementation contexts (SD = 12.3 percent). Meta-regression demonstrated a significant correlation between the level of social support received by participants and the reduction in trauma symptoms experienced (R² = 0.42, p < .001). These findings significantly exceed earlier reports such as those by Peltonen and Punamäki (2010) and Marwat et al. (2025), who estimated program effects within a moderate range (g = 0.45–0.52). Beyond confirming the effectiveness of these interventions, this study highlights the crucial role of local community support and the integration of cultural values as key components in optimizing program outcomes. Accordingly, the findings broaden both the theoretical and empirical horizons of understanding regarding the dynamics of successful trauma prevention programs in Middle Eastern conflict zones, particularly through the identification of mediating mechanisms such as community resilience and the influence of socio-cultural factors as primary moderators in the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions.

Abstract

This study designs and empirically tests the validity of the conceptual model of Etika Digital Ulul Albab as a form of psychological intervention aimed at reducing cyber-anxiety levels among Generation Z, drawing on data encompassing populations in Indonesia and Lebanon. Utilizing a meta-analytical approach applied to 47 online data sets (N = 12,847), this research employs Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to verify the theoretical construct proposed. The results indicate an excellent model fit (χ²/df = 2.14, CFI = 0.96, TLI = 0.95, RMSEA = 0.048, SRMR = 0.041). Additionally, the factor loading values for the Etika Digital Ulul Albab dimension range from 0.72 to 0.89, with a composite reliability of 0.93, indicating high internal consistency. Multivariate analysis reveals a significant reduction in cyber-anxiety levels by 34.2% (p < 0.001) in the Indonesian group and by 31.8% (p < 0.001) in the Lebanese group. Further mediation analysis demonstrates that Etika Digital Ulul Albab functions as a mediator in the relationship between digital literacy and cyber-anxiety (β = -0.452, p < 0.001). In the view of the researchers, these findings provide empirical support for Guryanova et al. (2020), who underscore the importance of Etika Digital Ulul Albab, while differing from Falk’s (2024) approach that places greater emphasis on technical dimensions. The principal novelty of this study lies in the integration of the Ulul Albab concept, which incorporates both spiritual and intellectual intelligence, into the Etika Digital Ulul Albab framework as a psychological foundation. This approach has not previously been explored within a cross-cultural context related to cyber-anxiety. As such, the developed model offers a novel theoretical contribution to the field of digital psychology by integrating Islamic perspectives with Western psychological paradigms.

Abstract

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the gastrointestinal tract that is often accompanied by psychological disorders such as depression. This study aims to analyze the impact of depression on the effectiveness of Crohn's disease treatment through a systematic review and meta-analysis. A literature search was conducted across electronic databases, including PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, for studies published in the last five years. Of the 1,247 articles identified, 28 studies met the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis results indicate that Crohn's disease patients with depression have a lower remission rate (OR = 0.65, 95% CI: 0.54-0.78) and a higher relapse rate (HR = 1.58, 95% CI: 1.32-1.89) compared to patients without depression. Additionally, subgroup analysis reveals that the negative effects of depression are more pronounced in patients receiving biological therapy. These findings underscore the importance of a holistic approach in the management of Crohn's disease, considering the psychological aspects of patients to optimize treatment outcomes.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between life satisfaction and the effectiveness of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) treatment through a systematic review and meta-analysis of 32 studies (N=8,746) published between 2018 and 2023. The analysis reveals a moderate negative correlation between life satisfaction and lupus disease activity (r=-0.38, 95% CI: -0.44 to -0.32, p<0.001). More specifically, the data demonstrate a strong positive correlation between life satisfaction and quality of life in the context of health (r=0.52, 95% CI: 0.47-0.57, p<0.001) and a moderate positive correlation with medication adherence (r=0.34, 95% CI: 0.28-0.40, p<0.001). Longitudinal analysis (n=6 studies) shows that early improvements in life satisfaction are significantly predictive of reductions in lupus disease activity (?=-0.24, p<0.001) and enhancements in quality of life (?=0.29, p<0.001) over six months to 2 years. Meta-regression analysis further identifies age (?=0.008, p=0.03) and disease duration (?=0.015, p=0.01) as significant moderators of the effect of life satisfaction on SLE treatment outcomes. These findings extend previous research by Diener and Chan (2011) on well-being and health and by Mok et al. (2019) on depression in SLE by emphasizing the specific role of life satisfaction in SLE management. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on life satisfaction rather than solely negative risk factors, highlighting the potential for life satisfaction-based interventions in the management of SLE. This research supports the integration of life satisfaction assessments and psychosocial interventions into standard SLE care protocols, offering new insights into the psychoimmunological approach to SLE treatment.
