Abstract

Wasathiyah Islam in the current context is faced with increasing violent content in the name of religion, the proliferation of religious populism, and the rise of radical discourse in virtual spaces. This article aims to map the role of Muslim figures who campaign for Wasathiyah Islam on digital media platforms so that the public can understand it clearly. This research uses a qualitative method based on literature study. Primary data is centred on narratives of Islamic wasathiyah through YouTube channels of four Indonesian Muslim figures, including Din Syamsudin, Quraish Shihab, Nasaruddin Umar, and Habib Husein Jakfar. Secondary data includes articles, journals, books, and digital traces about wasathiyah Islam. Data collection techniques focused on literature review and documentation. Data analysis techniques included data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that these four Muslim figures play a significant role in promoting wasathiyah Islam in the digital space as an effort to present a moderate Islamic perspective and emphasise the principle of tolerance. The content of moderate Islam as a religious knowledge offering to the public through the perspective of Muslim figures is not limited to disseminating Islamic values but also seeks to counter takfiri interpretations, block radical content, and combat the spread of hoax information on social media, which is currently spreading like a snowball effect and being exploited by various actors under the guise of religion.   Keywords: Wasathiyah Islam, Digital Media, Muslim Figures

Abstract

The development of communication technology in modern mass media has shown significant progress. However, traditional media still has its own charm. The existence of traditional media remains popular because it not only serves as a means of conveying messages but also as a manifestation of values of belief and cultural heritage that are worth preserving. Therefore, cultural elements such as the village ritual continue to function as one form of traditional media for spreading religious teachings. In addition to conveying religious messages, this ritual also serves as an outlet for escaping the monotony of rapid modernization. As a result, traditional-based media for spreading religious teachings, such as the village ritual, have persisted to this day and received positive acceptance from society.

Abstract

The transformation of da'wah communication in multicultural urban environments reflects the dynamic interaction between religious messages in diverse social contexts. This study investigates how da'wah communication practices evolve within urban Muslimah communities in Indonesia, with a focusing on their adaptation to multicultural challenges and opportunities. This research is a library study that aims to understand the transformation of Islamic Preaching Communication in a multicultural society. The findings show a significant shift from conventional and one-way da'wah delivery to an interactive, dialogical, and contextually adaptive communication model. This transformation is driven by the challenges of Multicultural Da'wah among Muslim Women's Communities, Da'wah Transformation in the Muslim Women's Community Environment, and the Role of Digital Media in Comprehensively Reaching the Audience. This study concludes that the transformation of da'wah communication and media is not only a necessity, but also a necessity in facing the complexity of a modern, multicultural society. The urban Muslim community in Indonesia proves that more inclusive, dialogical, and adaptive da'wah can be a unifying bridge amidst differences.
