Abstract

The diverse cultural interpretations and expressions of Ramadan across different societies have not been extensively examined through a linguistic perspective, especially comparing Muslim-majority and minority contexts. This study aims to investigate how the word "Ramadan" is used and understood in religious lectures by Indonesian and American Ustaz, focusing on differences influenced by cultural and social environments. The research analyzes a corpus of transcribed lecture videos, processed into .txt format, and examined using AntConc software for word frequency, sentence positioning, distribution, and collocational patterns. The findings reveal that Indonesian lectures emphasize communal worship, ritual practices, and collective spiritual growth. In contrast, American lectures highlight individual faith journeys, personal spiritual struggles, and the challenges of preserving religious identity within a non-Muslim-majority society. These results demonstrate that while both cultures view Ramadan as a time for spiritual purification and seeking forgiveness, the primary distinction lies in the communal versus individual orientation of religious experience.

Abstract

This study extends preliminary findings on semantic aspects in translating thermodynamic terminology from English to Indonesian in Frank White's Fluid Mechanics textbook. Specialized terminology translation poses unique challenges related to meaning equivalence across languages. This expanded analysis employs qualitative content analysis to examine semantic categories in greater depth. Data were collected from the glossary of thermodynamic terms in the original English edition (1998) and its Indonesian translation (2001). The analysis classified semantic meanings into lexical, grammatical, contextual, socio-cultural, and textual categories. The results show that lexical, grammatical, and textual meanings predominantly appear in the translation process, reflecting the challenges and strategies in conveying specialized scientific terminology.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Anies Baswedan's thinking patterns, particularly during dialogues, using Hegelian Analysis, which emphasizes the process of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis in the dynamics of social-political conflict and resolution. This study also highlights the importance of democratic education in facilitating critical and in-depth understanding of political issues. The research employs a qualitative approach with content analysis and narrative analysis methods, using Hegelian Dialectics to identify the thesis, antithesis, and synthesis in Anies Baswedan's thoughts and the "Desak Anies" program in Semarang, as covered by MetroTV and uploaded in February 2024. Data collection techniques include literature review from various sources, content analysis of the "Desak Anies" program, and public documentation of the program on YouTube. Keywords: two or more important, specific, or representative words or phrases for the journal. Based on the results, Anies Baswedan typically answers questions in a structured dialogue format with standard composition: introduction, content, and conclusion. He does this to demonstrate his understanding of the thesis (initial condition), antithesis (opposing condition), and synthesis (improved condition). Throughout this process, Anies Baswedan always provides examples as reasoning to help his interlocutors understand the logic he wants to convey. Therefore, Anies Baswedan does not answer briefly because he tends to explain at length to ensure clarity. This approach fosters enthusiasm among the public, especially Millennials and Generation Z, to be politically aware; they are motivated to learn about Indonesian politics and to decide on the best future leaders for them. The concept of "Desak Anies" illustrates how democratic principles can be simply exemplified by a leader.

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji buku teks bahasa Prancis Édito A1 melalui perspektif Linguistik Sistemik Fungsional (SFL) untuk menganalisis bagaimana representasi budaya dikonstruksi bersama dengan makna linguistik bagi pembelajar tingkat pemula dalam konteks universitas. Meskipun semakin diakui pentingnya mengintegrasikan budaya ke dalam pengajaran bahasa, cara buku teks mengkodekan makna budaya secara linguistik masih merupakan potensi yang perlu dieksplorasi terkait bahasa tertentu dan ideologi yang tertanam di dalamnya. Sebagai sumber yang banyak digunakan dalam program pendidikan guru bahasa Prancis, Édito A1 menawarkan tempat yang berharga untuk mengeksplorasi persilangan antara pembelajaran bahasa dan transmisi budaya. Penelitian ini mengikuti pendekatan SFL dengan memanfaatkan makna ideasional dari materi pembelajaran buku teks. Kerangka analisis wacana ini memandu analisis yang menyelidiki bagaimana buku teks mengkodekan pengetahuan budaya, memposisikan pembelajar, melibatkan pembelajar, menyampaikan sikap, dan mengonstruksi peran sosial. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa Édito A1, seperti buku teks lainnya, menanamkan konten budaya melalui sampel interaksi sosial di dunia Francophone.
