Abstract

Improving the quality of primary education in under-resourced areas such as Ciherang Village, West Java, remains challenging due to limited facilities, guidance, and access to structured psychological assessments. This community engagement program aimed to help students at SD Ciherang recognize their cognitive abilities, interests, and personality traits through a systematic assessment. A total of 53 sixth-grade students participated in three instruments: Raven’s Colored Progressive Matrices (CPM) for cognitive ability, SDS Holland for career interests, and the Big Five Inventory (BFI) for personality traits. The program was implemented using a Community-Based Research (CBR) approach that actively involved teachers and Thematic Community Service (KKNT) students. The results showed that most students had good to very good cognitive abilities. Their dominant interests were Artistic and Social, indicating a strong preference for creativity and social interaction. Personality profiles were primarily characterized by Agreeableness and Extraversion, reflecting cooperative, empathetic, and sociable tendencies. These findings highlight the need for extracurricular programs focusing on arts, social engagement, and leadership, as well as structured activities to develop discipline and self-management skills. This initiative provides tangible contributions in the form of tailored recommendations for extracurricular development based on students’ profiles and offers psychological data as a foundation for school policy planning. The approach is expected to enhance educational services and support the optimal development of students’ potential.ABSTRAKPeningkatan kualitas pendidikan dasar di daerah terbatas seperti Desa Ciherang, Jawa Barat, sering terhambat keterbatasan fasilitas, bimbingan, dan asesmen psikologis yang memadai.

Abstract

Equitable and quality education is the main foundation in shaping a young generation that is ready to face future changes and challenges. However, before children are directed towards a particular educational or career path, it is important for them to first recognize themselves—including their strengths, interests, and character. Based on this idea, the Faculty of Psychology at Tarumanagara University, together with KKN students, conducted psychological assessments for sixth-grade students at SDN Caringin Nunggal and SDN Maleber on February 27, 2025. This activity was attended by 36 students using three instruments, namely Colored Progressive Matrices (CPM) to assess cognitive abilities, Self-Directed Search (SDS) Holland to explore career interests, and ENS_48 to map personalities. The assessment results showed that nearly half of the students had excellent cognitive abilities. In terms of interests, many students showed a tendency toward social, artistic, and investigative fields, which emphasize interaction, creativity, and curiosity. Meanwhile, the prominent personality traits were warmth and openness, as reflected in high scores on the agreeableness and openness dimensions. These results are expected to serve as a starting point for students to understand themselves more deeply. With the support of teachers and parents, this assessment plays an important role as a guide in designing educational steps and futures in line with the potential of each child.

Abstract

Personality development in elementary school-aged children serves as a crucial foundation for shaping character, thought patterns, and social behavior that will carry into adolescence and adulthood. Understanding the personality traits of elementary students is an important factor in predicting their academic achievement. The dynamics of personality development, particularly in rural areas, possess unique and complex characteristics. Factors such as close-knit social environments, strong local cultural values, and limited access to educational facilities play a significant role in shaping children's personalities in these regions. Ciherang Village, located in Cianjur Regency, West Java, is one such rural area with distinct social and educational characteristics. In the context of primary education, challenges such as limited infrastructure, restricted access to learning resources, and a shortage of qualified educators can influence both the learning process and the psychological development of students. Amid these conditions, understanding students' personality traits becomes increasingly vital. This study aims to provide an overview of the personality profiles of elementary school students in Ciherang Village using a descriptive quantitative approach. A total of 154 students from several elementary schools in the village participated in this research. The instrument used was a questionnaire consisting of 48 items assessing five personality dimensions: Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. The analysis revealed that most participants scored high in Agreeableness and low in Neuroticism. These findings suggest the need for implementing collaborative learning systems and relational approaches to support students' optimal personality development.
