Abstract

This study aimed to discover the students' perception of an iconic model for mobile assisted language learning. The Android application was developed to help nursing students who learn English for Specific Purposes (ESP) especially speaking. The data were obtained quantitatively. The instrument used was questionnaires which were distributed in two stages of the development process. The first was during the preliminary study and the second was distributed in the implementation stage. The result showed that the students perceived that the navigation pane, the screen design, the information presented, the media integration, and the overall functionality are good (4.1) out of the maximal score (5.00). In conclusion, SPINE application is also efficient and acceptable for the users in terms of its navigation pane, screen design information presentation, media integration, and overall functionality.

Abstract

Several studies on translation have been carried out, namely on the problem of untranslation, translation of terms from various fields, and the formation of target language terms with spelling adjustments. One of them is the field of thermodynamics which is part of the field of Mechanical Engineering, which has many terms borrowed from Dutch and English. Therefore, the researchers are interested in investigating the morphological aspects of the translation of thermodynamic terms using the natural borrowing technique. This study used qualitative research methods. Researchers took terminology data from two books, namely The Fundamental of Engineering Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics. The results showed that the forms of borrowing that occurred were (1) borrowing by adjusting spelling and pronunciation adjustments; (2) borrowing with spelling adjustment without pronunciation adjustment; (3) borrowing without spelling adjustment, but with pronunciation adjustment; (4) adjustments to the spelling of prefixes and bound forms found 15 forms of adjustment; (5) suffix spelling adjustments found 20 forms of adjustment; and (6) a combination of translation and borrowing. In short, morphological aspects in translating thermodynamics terms are very important because they relate to the technique used.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) on enhancing students' literacy skills in the international program of accounting. The mobile-phone platforms worked as media of interaction with the students in the learning-teaching and outside the classroom. The mobile phone is used as a medium for practising both reading and writing. This research was a quantitative study using an experimental design. The population of the study was the students of the International Program of Accounting department. The result showed that Sig. (2-tailed) .197 > 0.05 which means there was no significant effect in the use of MALL to enhance the students' literacy skills in general. Instead, the use of MALL has a significant effect in improving the spelling which was Sig. (2-tailed) 0.043 < 0.05, and grammar for the plural and singular parts for Sig. (2-tailed) 0.025<0.05.

Abstract

Bilingualism happens not only orally but also in written Indonesian articles. Usually, the articles use Indonesian and English terms. Bilingualism even can be seen in the articles’ titles. One of the fields that often use bilingual terms is found in Mechanical Engineering's articles. It happens because mechanical engineering has specialized terminology that sometimes untranslated into Indonesian terms. Many Indonesian experts have translated many English books with many variations of translation results. Therefore, the translation results are still questioned whether they are acceptable or not in Indonesian. This study aims to examine the factors of bilingualisms by observing titles of articles and finding the translation methods to translate the terminology from English to Indonesian. This study was qualitative research; by using questionnaires and observation, the research reveals that the main factor is untranslatability, where the English terminology cannot find its equivalent meaning in Indonesian. By using Molina and Albir's translation techniques, researchers reveal that the English terminologies can be translated in Indonesian using (1) amplification, (2) borrowing, (3) established equivalence, (4) calque, and (5) literal translation. This study concludes that the untranslatability problem can be solved when the experts try to use the accepted translation results rather than using English terms.
