Abstract

The era of globalization has significantly impacted various aspects of life, including the Islamic education system. The rapid pace of modernization and technological advancement necessitates a renewal of educational approaches that remain rooted in Islamic values. This study aims to comparatively examine the concept of Islamic education from the perspectives of two prominent figures, Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas and KH. Abdurrahman Wahid, in responding to the challenges of globalization while preserving Islamic and national identity. This research employs a qualitative method through a library research approach, using content analysis of the major works of both thinkers. Al-Attas emphasizes education as a process of Islamization of knowledge and the cultivation of adab (ethical discipline), whereas Wahid focuses on the importance of inclusivity, pluralism, and openness to global thought while upholding Islamic principles. Their differing backgrounds and intellectual orientations offer unique frameworks in formulating an Islamic education system relevant to contemporary contexts. The findings reveal that despite methodological and philosophical differences, both figures share the view that Islamic education serves as a means of social and moral transformation. Al-Attas’s concept is more normative and philosophical, while Wahid’s ideas are practical and contextual. These insights suggest that synthesizing both perspectives could provide a strategic foundation for developing an Islamic education system that is both adaptive to global challenges and faithful to spiritual and cultural Islamic values.

Abstract

This study explores the concept of tarbiyah in the hadith of Prophet Muhammad SAW and its relevance to contemporary education. Using a qualitative methods and literature review, the research finds that tarbiyah serves not only as an educational process but also encompasses the development of individual character and morality. The results indicate that the integration of tarbiyah values into modern educational curricula is crucial for creating a holistic learning environment that nurtures both the intellect and the spirit of students. Furthermore, the role of educators as exemplars in applying the principles of tarbiyah is key to shaping a generation that is both intelligent and morally upright. This study also identifies various challenges and opportunities in implementing tarbiyah in the modern era, particularly in the context of globalization and technological advancements. It emphasizes the importance of continuous evaluation in the learning process to ensure the effectiveness of educational practices. By applying the principles of tarbiyah, it is hoped that education can produce individuals who excel academically while also possessing integrity, strong moral character, and high social awareness, contributing positively to society.

Abstract

Islamic education plays a crucial role in shaping a whole human being who is not only intellectually intelligent but also morally upright and spiritually profound. However, modern education often falls into a dichotomy between religious and secular sciences, resulting in moral decline and a weakened spiritual orientation among students. To address these challenges, this study examines the educational thought of Imam Al-Ghazali and Muhammad Abduh within the framework of holistic Islamic education. The aim is to compare Al-Ghazali’s concept of spirituality with Abduh’s rationalism and to explore their relevance in constructing a comprehensive Islamic education system. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method through library research, analyzing classical works of both scholars as well as secondary literature from books and academic journals. The findings reveal that Al-Ghazali emphasizes tazkiyatun nafs (purification of the soul), moral formation, and the integration of knowledge with spirituality. Meanwhile, Abduh promotes educational reform, rationality, and openness to modern sciences through ijtihad. The synthesis of their ideas suggests that ideal Islamic education must harmonize intellect and spirituality, reject the dichotomy of knowledge, and cultivate individuals who are both critical and religious. The contribution of this study lies in offering a conceptual framework for developing a contemporary Islamic curriculum that balances intellectual, spiritual, and moral dimensions.

Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas kontribusi Daulah Umayyah terhadap perkembangan sistem pendidikan Islam sebagai salah satu fase penting dalam sejarah peradaban Islam. Periode ini menegaskan bahwa pendidikan menjadi fondasi utama bagi kemajuan sosial, politik, dan intelektual umat Islam. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan peran Umayyad Caliphate dalam pembentukan sistem pendidikan yang terorganisir, pengembangan lembaga seperti kuttab dan masjid, serta integrasi antara ilmu keagamaan dan ilmu rasional dalam kurikulum pembelajaran. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan studi pustaka melalui analisis literatur klasik dan modern yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Daulah Umayyah berhasil membangun struktur pemerintahan dan pendidikan yang kuat, memperluas akses terhadap ilmu pengetahuan, serta menumbuhkan tradisi intelektual yang terbuka terhadap peradaban lain. Meskipun pada akhirnya mengalami kemunduran akibat konflik internal dan kesenjangan sosial, warisan keilmuan dan sistem pendidikannya tetap menjadi pijakan bagi perkembangan pendidikan Islam pada masa berikutnya. Temuan ini memberikan implikasi teoretis bagi kajian sejarah pendidikan Islam, khususnya dalam memahami relasi antara kekuasaan politik dan perkembangan intelektual
