Abstract

Background: Obesity is linked to the rising incidence of type 2 diabetes, with excessive dietary fat intake being one of the primary causes. The development of fat animal models has been discovered to be a standard experimental strategy based on replicating human behaviour in food consumption. Objectives: This study aims to investigate how long-term consumption of a high-fat, high-fructose (HFHF) diet affects the indicators of diabetes mellitus in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, such as insulin sensitivity, by measuring the HOMA-IR, counting beta cells, and analyzing the histology of the pancreas. Methods: This experiment was conducted with 36 male SD rats in normal and HFHF groups. The normal groups had a modified AIN-93 M, while the HFHF group received a high-fat diet with 30% fructose-based water. Feed and beverage intakes were monitored every 24 hours to calculate daily caloric consumption (energy intake) for 17 weeks. Results: The results demonstrated a significant difference between the normal and HFHF groups in the HOMA-IR levels (insulin sensitivity) and number of pancreatic beta cells (p-value<0.05). This implied that following 17 weeks of HFHF intake, the HOMA-IR level of insulin sensitivity was reduced. However, the islet of Langerhans in pancreatic histopathology seemed damaged in the HFHF rats, as evidenced by the changes in their shape and lower beta cell number. Conclusions: Consuming the HFHF diet over an extended period increased glucose level, decreased insulin sensitivity, and damaged pancreatic histopathology.

Abstract

Objective: Food industry segmentation often targets teenagers, increasing during pandemics which contributes to diet and lifestyle changes that can lead to obesity. This habit began in elementary school due to the ignorance of children and parents towards nutrition and the availability of snacks and sugary food. Thus, control and a supportive environment are needed to prevent obesity among adolescents. Content: The Mayor of Surabaya held an annual competition to increase community empowerment through the Kampung'e Arek Suroboyo program, including Kampung Sehat and Kampung Pendidikan. This program could be an excellent opportunity to educate adolescents about the long-term effect of excessive sugar consumption by considering peer influence and socializing the obligation to put Nutritional Value Information in the small and micro-scale food industry. Furthermore, it involves the expertise to coach the citizen for two months. The women's association in the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) is an operational institution directly socialized with the community. Various health programs have proven successful with the PKK's synergy, from family planning (KB) to stunting. The empowerment movement has become a powerful weapon in dealing with health problems, including obesity. PKK advocacy through KP-KAS has great potential in shaping dietary behavior alteration in adolescents, as mothers play an essential role in food-related decision making. Therefore, there need to be additional KP-KAS assessment indicators, such as monitoring at the family level and grocery stores. Service delivery points of this program: 1) monitoring adolescent body weight from baseline to end line; 2) monitoring free-sugar added consumption in the school-based program; 3) monitoring Micro Small Medium Enterprises (UMKM) food products and products sold at the local stores already have food labels.

Abstract

Objective: Mother’s lack of nutrition knowledge is one of the risk factors that cause child malnutrition in Bali. Existing nutrition education program is not sufficient due to a lack of awareness, and the attendance only becomes a formality without understanding information and the desire to apply. This program innovation aims to improve mothers' understanding of the materials delivered, and it is expected that mothers can apply them into daily life. Content: Nutrition education programs have been conducted. Nevertheless, it needs innovations in order to run more effectively. Game-based nutrition education is one of the innovations to make the delivery of education more engaging. "Nutri Emo" is one of the game innovations that combines game methods and demonstrations to increase the interest and attention of mothers in Buleleng Regency to be active and participative when receiving the materials delivered. Each point earned from the game will be replaced by a beam. The beams are arranged and illustrated as child growth. It aims to show the mother that if she nourished the child well, the growth of the child will also be good. At the end of the program, we play the game "Ibu Pintar" to evaluate the mother's understanding of education. This program potentially increases the mother's understanding of the material presented and motivated her to make changes. Meanwhile, attractive program is also needs support from the community leader to be succed. Involving the head of the village's wife is the best option, as they are one of the figure close to the mothers in the village. Advocacy to the Village Head's Wife has great potential for the sustainability of the program. The village head's wife's support for this activity can increase community participation in this education program.
