Abstract

Highlights Ganyong tuber exhibits immunomodulatory activity against Staphylococcus aureus infection in mice. Ganyong tuber extract increases phagocytic activity, leukocyte count, and spleen weight in infected mice.   ABSTRACT Background:  Ganyong tubers (Canna edulis K.) are widely consumed by Indonesians as an alternative food source. However, no studies have investigated the pharmacological properties of ganyong tubers, particularly their immunomodulatory activity. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of ganyong tubers in mice infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Material and Method: This study used a randomized experimental design involving 30 male BALB/c mice divided into five groups, including a normal control, a negative control (infected with Staphylococcus aureus), and three groups treated with ganyong (Canna edulis K.) extract at doses of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg BW. The extract was administered orally for seven days, followed by S. aureus injection. Phagocytic activity, leukocyte count, spleen weight, and antibody levels were evaluated using microscopy and ELISA. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Duncan’s post hoc test. Result: This study evaluated the immunomodulatory effects of ganyong tuber (Canna edulis K.) extract on phagocytosis activity and capacity, leukocyte count, spleen weight, and antibody levels in mice infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Phagocytosis activity and capacity were highest in the group receiving 50 mg/kg body weight (BW) extract, with decreasing effects at higher doses. Leukocyte counts were highest in the infected untreated group, while spleen weight was significantly increased in the 50 mg/kg BW treatment group compared to controls. Although the 100 mg/kg BW group showed the highest antibody levels, these differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Ganyong tuber extract demonstrated immunomodulatory activity by enhancing innate immune responses against S. aureus infection.

Abstract

The objective of this present study was to identify a suitable artificial diet formulation to support the development of eri silkworms, with castor leaves (Ricinus communis) constituting the primary ingredient. The quality of the artificial diet was evaluated using neonate larvae, comparing it to fresh castor leaves. The nutritional value was assessed by analyzing the protein content in the hemolymph of fifth-instar larvae using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and proximate analysis. The findings demonstrated that an artificial diet containing castor leaf powder during early instars, with fresh leaves being incorporated into the diet later instars, resulted in higher larval protein content. The weight of cocoon, empty cocoon, and pupa was 1.59 ± 0.05 g, 0.23 ± 0.02 g, and 1.37 ± 0.05 g, respectively. The shell ratio, female wingspan, and egg fertility were found to be 15.31 ± 0.11%, 2.42 ± 0.20 cm, and 79.2 ± 5.83 eggs, respectively. Formulation P2 exhibited the lowest larval mortality (4.23 ± 0.58%) and hemolymph protein content of 27.51 μg/mL These findings are of imperative for the cultivation of eri silk worm using artificial diet to avoid pathogen contamination and controllable nutrient content considering the early larval instar that is highly sensitive to microbes and nutrient deficiencies.

Abstract

The level of critical thinking skills among students in science education is still relatively low because the learning models used have not been able to optimize their thinking processes, which are still teacher-centered and lack meaningful problem-solving experiences. This study aims to analyze the impact of the PBL model in improving students' critical thinking skills by applying the Systematic Literature Review method in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. This research method identified 781 articles through Google Scholar, of which 22 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results show that PBL effectively optimizes students' higher-order thinking skills by involving them in contextual learning. PBL also provides more structured opportunities for scientific reasoning compared to other models. Further research is recommended to analyze the integration of PBL with various other digital media that can explore long-term impacts and involve broader levels of education for more comprehensive results.

Abstract

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional model that guides students to understand concepts through solving real-world problems presented at the beginning of instruction. This study aims to examine the implementation of PBL in strengthening STEM ability in science learning at the junior high school level. Based on recent empirical evidence, this review highlights the effectiveness of PBL in improving critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, collaboration, and scientific literacy within STEM-oriented education. The study employs a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by PRISMA. Articles were identified through national and international databases and selected using clear inclusion and exclusion criteria. Studies focusing on the implementation, challenges, and outcomes of  PBL in STEM-based science learning at the junior high school level were included, while conceptual and non-empirical works were excluded. The review of 20 articles indicated that the integration of  PBL significantly contributes to the enhancement of students’ STEM skills. Four main themes emerged: the alignment of PBL with STEM ability such as inquiry, experimentation, and engineering design; the role of PBL in fostering higher-order thinking and problem-solving; the impact of PBL on collaboration and communication in STEM projects; and implementation challenges related to teacher readiness, curriculum alignment, and limited resources. Overall, the results confirm that PBL is an effective pedagogical model for supporting STEM-based science education in junior high schools. This review is limited by its database scope and time range, which may exclude relevant studies. Future research is recommended to employ longitudinal designs and cross-context comparisons. This study provides insights for teachers, curriculum developers, and policymakers to optimize PBL integration through professional development, contextual learning resources, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Keywords: problem-based learning, junior high school, science learning, STEM education, systematic literature review
