Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed at determining the effectiveness of the use of video-based on local content Flores on the speaking ability of students at SMPN 1 Ende. This research is a classroom action research with the quasi-experimental method. The results of this study indicated that the Flores Local Content Video has not affected the English speaking skill of SMP Negeri 1 Ende students because the practical learning method of speaking English does not use videos based on local content in the Flores area, but students are familiar with the implementing of English learning videos in general. The researcher hopes that this article can be useful for students and teachers as well as future researchers who will study the improvement of students' English speaking skills. The researcher also expects that English teachers can create and apply English learning videos based on local content.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the types of associative meaning in proverbs in Bajawa language used by people in Doka village. There were five types of associative meaning, stylistic or social meaning, effective meaning, reflective meaning, and collocative meaning as stated by Leech (1981). This study used qualitative method to analyze the data. Collecting data adopted was that the writer is the main instrument by preparing the list of proverbs in Bajawa language used by people in Doka village, then, choosing some native speakers to complete the data. Data analysis was by classifying proverbs into five types of associative meaning. The analysis shows that there are four types associative meaning can be found on proverbs. Proverbs are used in different context. They are in birth context, wedding context, reba context, process of building the traditional house and death context, affective meaning found in proverbs of wedding context. The result shows that there are 103 proverbs used by people in Doka village. The writer found there are 65 proverbs in connotative meaning, 8 proverbs in stylistic or social, 25 proverbs in affective meaning and 5 proverbs in reflective meaning. Those proverbs are used in different context.

Abstract

This paper looks at gender relations in “Penu and Vegu the Orphan”, one of the legends from Ngada. The thematic analysis of this paper revealed that the legend portrays three intertwined gender relations, such as (i) patriarchal authority, (ii) female agency and self-transformation, and (iii) gendered labor and domestic power. The analysis demonstrates that simplistic binary notions of male dominance or female subordination are challenged through Penu’s character. This female protagonist navigated a male-dominated society, using her agency through nature-driven transformation and domestic works. This paper contributes to a wider discussion of gender in folklore by underscoring the importance of indigenous oral literature as a medium for understanding the diversity of gender constructions beyond Western contexts.
