Abstract

Background: The accurate assessment of cognitive ability requires valid data, particularly among older adults. Non-credible performance, or symptom exaggeration, threatens the validity of neuropsychological assessments in Indonesia. Purpose: This study aims to examine the diagnostic accuracy of four Performance Validity Tests (PVTs) by comparing healthy older adults and individuals simulating cognitive impairment. Method: An experimental two-group design was used (N=25). Participants passed rigorous cognitive screening (MoCA > 26) and were randomly assigned to a control (n=12) or experimental (n=13) group. PVTs included NV-MSVT, TMJPI, CIHT, and embedded TMT measures. Findings: Mann-Whitney U tests showed significant differences (p< .05) between groups, with controls outperforming simulators. ROC analysis yielded optimal cut-off scores for all PVTs: NV-MSVT A1 (≤ 83), NV-MSVT A2 (≤ 79), TMJPI (≤ 87), CIHT (≤ 9), TMT-A (≥ 131), and TMT-B (≥ 200). AUC values ranged from .713 to .907, indicating good to excellent accuracy in distinguishing the groups. Implication: These findings establish a robust empirical foundation for more ethical and valid neuropsychological research in Indonesia, providing culturally relevant cut-offs to mitigate misdiagnosis in clinical practice, advance cross-cultural neuropsychology in Asia, and strengthen administrative and forensic decision-making.

Abstract

Happiness is an important variable in improving the physical and psychological well-being of the elderly. An effective intervention to enhance the variable is reminiscence. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the impact of virtual reminiscence intervention on the happiness of the elderly. The method used was quasi-experimental with a pre-test and post-test design as well as a non-equivalent control group. The sample consisted of 7 and 8 participants in experimental and control groups, aged 60-74 years. In addition, purposive sampling method was used to select participants from 3 nursing homes in Yogyakarta. Data was also collected using Oxford Happiness Questionnaire (OHQ), Happy Emotion Thermometer Scale, interviews, and observations. The results showed a significant difference between control and experimental groups on OHQ and Happy Emotion Thermometer scales. According to qualitative evaluation, the intervention generated positive feelings and reduced negative emotions. In this context, virtual reminiscence intervention sessions played a role in increasing the happiness of the elderly.

Abstract

BackgroundCognitive stimulation therapy (CST) has been proven to be beneficial in improving cognition and quality of life in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and mild dementia (MD). This study investigates the benefit of more frequent exclusively CST intervention compared to less-frequent CST-exercise combination on cognitive ability among elderly people with cognitive impairment. MethodsA quasi-experimental controlled study involving 22 subjects aged = 60 years with cognitive impairment. They were divided into three groups: group A (6 months, weekly CST + exercise sessions, n=13), Group B (3 months, twice-weekly CST-only sessions, n=5), group C (3 months, no intervention, n=4) as control. The Modified Mini Mental State Examination Indonesian Version was used for evaluating the cognitive ability of the elderly subjects. Data were analyzed using one-way Anova and Kruskal-Wallis tests ResultsAll participants completed the study, the majority being female with mean age of 70.43 ± 6.97 years and differences in education level distribution across the three groups. The scores before and after the intervention showed a significant difference in the registration and construction domains (p<0.005). However, there was a greater improvement of the mean difference in cognitive scores in groups A and B compared to the control group, although the difference was not statistically significant (p >0.05). ConclusionA twice-weekly CST-only intervention and a once-a-week CST-exercise combination provide better cognitive improvement than no intervention (control). Therefore, elderly people with cognitive impairment should be encouraged to engage in physical activities, brain training, and group activities for promoting the brain’s ability.

Abstract

This study explores the correlation between minority stress, self-esteem, and social well-being among young adult gay men and lesbian women in Indonesia, by analyzing the mediating role of self-esteem on the correlation between minority stress and social well-being. Design utilized in this study is correlational design with mediation analysis. This study draws on a sample of 437 gay men and lesbian women (Mage = 24). The authors employed Spearman’s correlation and mediation analysis on the three measurement instruments. Results showed that all the measurement instruments correlated with each other significantly. Specifically, minority stress reduces self-esteem and in turn it will also lower the social well-being among young adult gay men and lesbian women in Indonesia. Moreover, the result also indicated that self-esteem have a partial mediating role on the relationship between minority stress and social well-being among young adult gay men and lesbian women. From the result of this study, it can be concluded that self-esteem is an important protective factor on gay men and lesbian women’s self-esteem. Therefore, the authors endorse a cultural shift to reduce minority stress among gay men and lesbian women in Indonesia. Additionally, organizations or mental health professionals may utilize self-esteem and social well-being as a mean for enhancing the mental health of Indonesian gay men and lesbian women.
