Abstract

Malaria remains one of the major infectious diseases and continues to be a public health problem in many tropical regions, including Indonesia. This disease is transmitted through the bite of infected Anopheles mosquitoes and can have serious impacts on health, productivity, and quality of life. Jayapura Regency, particularly Dosay Village, is one of the malaria-endemic areas that requires serious attention in terms of control and prevention efforts. This study aimed to analyze the influence of lifestyle and environmental conditions on the spread of malaria in Dosay Village. A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design was employed. The study sample consisted of 45 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, and analyzed using the chi-square test. The results showed a significant relationship between lifestyle and malaria transmission (p = 0.009), as well as between environmental conditions and malaria transmission (p = 0.002). These findings emphasize that community behaviors, such as using bed nets, maintaining household cleanliness, and avoiding outdoor activities at night, are closely associated with the risk of malaria transmission. Furthermore, environmental factors such as stagnant water, poor sanitation, and housing density also contribute significantly to the breeding of malaria vectors.

Abstract

Kata kunci: lansia; skrining kesehatan; terapi aktivitas kelompok; hipertensi; diabetes mellitus AbstractThe increase in the number of elderly in Indonesia presents challenges in terms of physical and psychosocial health. According to the 2022 Indonesian Health Profile, the prevalence of hypertension in the population aged 45–54 years reached 33.5% and increased to 63.2% in the age group of 55–64 years. Globally, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that in 2023, around 1.28 billion people worldwide will have hypertension in the age range of 30–79 years, with the majority of cases occurring in developing countries, including Indonesia. A similar condition can be seen at the Sentani Nursing Home, where most of the elderly have not received regular health checkups and are minimally involved in structured physical and social activities. This community service aims to apply a holistic approach through health screening and group activity therapy to improve the physical health status and psychosocial well-being of the elderly. The activity method includes three main stages: (1) health screening (blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight checks); (2) health education through interactive counseling; and (3) group activity therapy in the form of light gymnastics, cognitive games, and social activities with simple musical instruments. The activity was held on October 16, 2024, and involved 30 elderly as participants. Evaluation is carried out through direct observation of participants' behavior and expressions and the level of participation in activities. The screening results showed a tendency to hypertension and hyperglycemia in most participants, while observations showed increased motivation and social interaction after the activity. This activity shows that integrating early detection and stimulation of social activities can improve the quality of life of the elderly. A sustainable and synergistic program is needed with nursing home managers to expand the impact of activities. Keywords: elderly; health screening; group activity therapy; hypertension; diabetes mellitus.
