Abstract

Abstract

This essay examines the infamous contemporary crime called as planned obsolescence. The ramification of the capitalist system has made prominent mega-tech companies to shape technological standard and influence other to comply and acquire to such condition. It creates a regime of technological hegemonyin this case, I particularly place the utter focus to the Apple Companys alleged attempt to dominate the technology market by perpetrating certain time-window for science and technology inventions, inter alia“the manufacture, software system and design, to be out of date or deemed as obsolete when they have reached certain designated period of time, hence forcing the customers to make repeated purchase to keep up with the latest digital trend as the only way to survive technologically. Further, I will put into scrutiny the phenomenon of planned obsolescence regards to the framework of social crimes and its abominable excess of arbitrary social control that creates inequality to the society, particularly viewed from an overwhelmingly Foucauldian post-structuralist approach, specifically to the loyal technology customers. To present a thorough result of this study, I use a systematic overview of literature reviews by qualitative analysis.

Abstract

This paper explores the interplay between legal authority and religious influence in Indonesia, focusing on the highly publicized blasphemy trial of Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama, the former Governor of Jakarta. The study investigates two central points: first, although the trial was officially held to determine whether Ahok’s statements constituted blasphemy, the court proceedings largely centered on interpreting the Qur’an, shifting the case’s emphasis from blasphemy to religious definition. Second, the sentence handed down by the judges was not only more severe than what the prosecutors recommended but also indicative of deeper political dynamics. The paper contends that the verdict was influenced by majoritarian political forces, particularly in preserving Islamic dominance in a nation where Muslims form the majority, with Ahok representing a rare example of a Christian, Chinese-Indonesian holding high political office. Ultimately, the study argues that Indonesian courts frequently play an active role in reinforcing majoritarian narratives by legally defining religion, contributing to a broader regional trend where religious discourse is shaped by socio-political majoritarianism in Asian contexts.
