Abstract

Poetry is a literary genre that evolved throughout times, but features a common identity: deviations from linguistics norm to attain aesthetic value. One of such poems is Erwin Clarkson Garrett’s The Dyak Chief. This research aims to identify and analyze the semantic deviations featured in the The Dyak Chief and how the deviants related to the narrative quality of the poem. The objective of this research is to answer two research questions that the researcher addressed: the types of semantic deviations and how they serve the meaning purpose of the poem. The present research is a qualitative study with stylistics approach. Furthermore, the concept of narrative poetry was also elaborated in order to answer on how the deviants serve the meaning of the poem. Based on the conducted research, the poem contains the three main tropes of semantic deviation: semantic oddity (except for paradox), transference of meaning, and honest deceptions (except for litotes). Moreover, these deviations provided revelation, emotional aspect of the main character, and themes of The Dyak Chief. This deviants in turn helped to built the feature of the poem in regards of these three aspects as a narrative poetry. Keywords: stylistics, semantic deviations, The Dyak Chief, poetry, narrative

Abstract

This study investigates the ideological and discursive tensions surrounding Indonesia’s new capital city (IKN) project in East Kalimantan. While the government frames IKN as a “smart forest city” symbolizing national progress and ecological harmony, local communities—particularly indigenous groups—report environmental degradation and cultural displacement. Using Ecological Discourse Analysis (EDA) and framing theory, the research compares official narratives from presidential speeches and planning documents with grassroots perspectives documented by NGOs. The findings reveal a discursive gap that raises concerns about greenwashing and symbolic power in state-led development. This study contributes to ecolinguistics by highlighting how language mediates environmental ideology and public perception in contested urban transformations.

Abstract

Beliatn Sentiu is used by the Benuaq Dayak people as a non-medical treatment. This is because, The Beliatn Sentiu process uses offerings and mantra readings (bememang). The purpose of this study is to determine the musical characteristics of one of the music played and the formation of habitus that occurs in the Dayak Benuaq tribe in the Beliatn Sentiu Ritual process in Kutai Ing Martadipura. Research Methods The research methods used are Qualitative. This research also uses the approach of field research methods by Bruno Nettl, namely desk work and field work. Pemeliatn is the dominant agent, while Pengugu, Penu'ung, and Rotatn are the dominating agents. This is because Pemeliatn has a large capital, especially in cultural and social capital. The interaction of these two capitals forms a symbolic capital so that in The Beliatn Sentiu Ritual, the command of the Pemeliatn is always followed by The Pengugu, Penu'ung, and Rotatn. The beliefs of the Dayak Benuaq people are influenced by ancestral spirits and supernatural realms, making habitus constructed in the Beliatn Sentiu Ritual. The Beliatn Sentiu process is believed to be the help of ancestral spirits in healing. This is what makes the Beliatn Sentiu still carried out today.

Abstract

This research aims to determine whether the IKN-related discourses produced by the Indonesian government constitute a green narrative that promotes ecological conservation and protection or are merely greenwashing strategies designed to gain public acceptance. Fifty-two articles taken from the Indonesian government’s official website about IKN, https://ikn.go.id/ are the data source of this research. Utilizing AntConc and NVivo software, the researchers investigate the word frequency of environmentally related lexical choices and complete an analysis of the six-taxonomy of greenwashing. The results reveal that five greenwashing strategies are prominent: attention deflection, deceptive manipulation, decoupling, selective disclosure, and inefficient public voluntary programs. These strategies reflect the gap between environmental claims and actions, with the government focusing on technological solutions while downplaying or omitting critical ecological issues such as deforestation, biodiversity loss, and indigenous displacement. This research makes a valuable contribution to the field of ecolinguistics by emphasizing the need for a critical examination of governmental environmental narratives, particularly in situations where ecological claims are used to justify large-scale development. This analysis could be further developed in the future by integrating indigenous perspectives, ecological data, and longitudinal monitoring of IKN's environmental impact.
