Abstract

Sarcopenia is a degenerative condition commonly found in the elderly, characterized by a decline in muscle mass and strength, which significantly impacts quality of life and functional ability. Muscle mass loss occurs gradually from the age of 30 and accelerates markedly after the age of 65, increasing the risk of disability, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. Early detection of sarcopenia through handgrip strength measurement is considered an effective and practical method due to its non-invasive nature and ease of application in community settings. This activity aimed to screen handgrip strength among the adult population in Cengkareng to detect potential sarcopenia and raise awareness of the importance of maintaining muscle strength. The Plan–Do–Check–Action (PDCA) approach was employed as a continuous improvement framework for the activity. The screening was conducted at Cengkareng Indah Baptist School, West Jakarta, involving 67 participants. The results showed that 25 participants (37.32%) had low handgrip strength. Handgrip strength screening is effective in identifying sarcopenia risk, enabling early interventions that can improve quality of life and prevent complications in older age.

Abstract

Obesity and excessive body fat accumulation are major risk factors for various metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Measuring subcutaneous fat thickness using a fat caliper is a simple, effective, and cost-effective method to assess body fat percentage in the productive age population. This community service activity was carried out in Grogol Village, West Jakarta, involving 67 productive age participants. Measurements were taken at four main body points, namely biceps, triceps, suprailiac, and subscapular, by a trained team from the Faculty of Medicine, Tarumanagara University. The screening results showed that in the fat caliper examination, the percentage of participants with high to very high categories in the biceps, triceps, suprailiac, and subscapular areas were 43.28%, 31.35%, 35.82%, and 8.95%, respectively, indicating a potential risk of excess body fat. Education on obesity prevention through healthy diet and increased physical activity was provided to the participants. This activity emphasizes the importance of early screening using fat calipers and health education as promotive and preventive measures to prevent obesity complications and improve the quality of life of the community.
