Abstract

This study is based on the low level of students’ basic volleyball skills, particularly in performing the underhand passing technique, which is an essential component in supporting effective gameplay. The research aims to determine the improvement of underhand passing skills through the application of paired practice among students of SMPN 1 Adonara Tengah. This study employed a quantitative approach using a pre-experimental method with a one group pre-test and post-test design. The population consisted of all volleyball extracurricular students, with a total sample of 15 students selected using total sampling technique. Data were collected through a practical test instrument measuring underhand passing skills, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test. The findings indicate that the implementation of paired passing practice has a positive and significant effect on improving students’ underhand passing skills. The mean score increased from 10.6 in the pre-test to 13.8 in the post-test, with an improvement percentage of 30.19%. The result of the paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000, which is lower than 0.05, indicating a statistically significant improvement after the treatment. These results imply that paired practice can be effectively applied as an alternative learning method in physical education to enhance students’ technical skills, cooperation, and active participation in volleyball learning activities.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between arm muscle strength and the ability to perform the basic backhand stroke technique in badminton among tenth-grade students of SMPK Ratu Damai. The background of this research is based on the observation that students’ backhand stroke ability is still relatively low, which is suspected to be related to insufficient arm muscle strength as a primary source of power in executing the stroke. The objective of this study is to determine the extent of the relationship between arm muscle strength and backhand stroke performance. This research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population consisted of 59 students participating in badminton extracurricular activities, while the sample included 30 students selected through simple random sampling. Arm muscle strength was measured using a 60-second push-up test, whereas backhand stroke ability was assessed through a targeted backhand skill test using a scoring rubric. The results indicate that arm muscle strength plays an important role in supporting the effectiveness and accuracy of backhand strokes. Students with better arm muscle strength tend to produce stronger, more controlled, and more accurate strokes. The findings of this study imply that physical conditioning, particularly arm muscle strength training, should be integrated with technical training in physical education learning. This integration is expected to improve students’ overall badminton skills and enhance the effectiveness of learning outcomes in sports education
