Abstract

This research was conducted in response to the increasing cases of HIV/AIDS in Yogyakarta, particularly those caused by heterosexual groups, with a focus on the Bong Suwung prostitution area. The objective of this research is to understand the strategies employed by opinion leaders in suppressing the transmission of HIV/AIDS among commercial sex workers in that area. This research uses a qualitative method involving observation, interviews, and documentation, revealing two types of strategies - general and specific - involving steps such as routine health check-ups, affordable condom distribution, regular meetings, socialization, and the establishment of specialized associations. There are challenges in conducting this research, including low education, difficult economic conditions, age factors, and social stigma. Intensive approach strategies that are relevant to the theory of social penetration proved successful in building close relationships with sex workers, enabling them to receive more effective information and care. This research underscores the importance of collaboration with various stakeholders in HIV/AIDS prevention efforts, addressing social stigma, and establishing deeper relationships with HIV/AIDS patients. These actions are essential to tackle the complexity of this issue and minimize the spread of HIV/AIDS in prostitution areas like Bong Suwung.

Abstract

Representation Of The Role Of The Father In The Film “Kaka Boss” Abstract The phenomenon of low paternal involvement in childrearing has become an important social issue because it affects children’s emotional development, self-control, and character formation. This study aims to analyze in depth how the film Kaka Boss constructs representations of the father’s role and its significance in shaping public understanding of fatherhood within the family, using a constructivist paradigm that views social reality as the result of meaning construction through cultural processes, along with a qualitative approach. The subject of the study is the film Kaka Boss, while the object of analysis focuses on the representation of the character Ferdinand “Kaka Boss” Omakare as a father figure. Data were collected through non-participant observation by documenting scenes, dialogues, gestures, and audio-visual elements, and were validated through source triangulation. Data analysis was conducted using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach, which interprets meaning through the relationship between sign, object, and interpretant, and was further linked to Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to understand the process of meaning construction regarding the father’s role in the film. The findings show that Kaka Boss represents a caring, responsible father who is actively involved in supporting his child’s education and emotional life, while also constructing an alternative narrative of masculinity by challenging negative stereotypes associated with the debt collector profession. These findings affirm that film functions as a medium of social reflection that not only represents reality but also contributes to shaping public understanding of the importance of fathers’ involvement in parenting and character development in contemporary families.

Abstract

Representations of Structural Violence in the Film 24 Hours with Gaspar Abstract Social inequality experienced by marginalized groups often does not manifest as physical violence but operates covertly through systems and power relations that are perceived as normal in everyday life. The film 24 Hours with Gaspar represents this condition through narrative and visual elements that depict human suffering as a consequence of unequal social structures. This study explicitly aims to examine the representation of structural violence in 24 Hours with Gaspar, with the selection of the film based on its strong capacity to reflect the social realities of marginalized groups in contemporary urban settings. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, positioning the film as the primary object of analysis. Data were collected through observations of relevant scenes, dialogues, and visual symbols, and analyzed using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic approach, referring to Johan Galtung’s theory of structural violence and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation which are closely connected to cultural and media studies and have been widely applied in previous research on social inequality and symbolic domination. The findings indicate that the film portrays practices of exploitation, organ trafficking, and the impoverishment of the lower class as part of systemic social mechanisms, represented through dark visual signs, unequal power relations between characters, and social spaces that restrict the mobility and life choices of the lower class. Violence is not presented explicitly but operates through social and economic structures that limit the characters’ life choices. This study confirms that 24 Hours with Gaspar functions as a medium of social critique that reveals forms of structural violence and encourages awareness of social injustice.
