Abstract

This research mainly to identify language contrast used by male and female on Raffi Ahmad and Nagita Slavina podcast video in RANS entertainment youtube channel. The theory used in this research is the differences between male and female language use in the form of six contrasts by Deborah Tannen (1990). The research method used is qualitative method. The results showed that the way of male speaking, the writers get 7 status, 1 independency, 2 advice, 1 information, 1 orders, and 9 conflict. On the other hand, for the way of female speaking, the writers get 1 support, 1 understanding, 4 feelings, 1 proposal, and 3 compromise. The writers didn’t get intimacy from female in this podcast video between Raffi and Nagita.

Abstract

This study investigates vowel insertion in Indonesian by examining the phenomenon through both Generative Phonology and phonetic realization. The research is grounded in the framework of Chomsky and Halle (1968), who propose that phonological rules map underlying representations onto surface forms, and in Crystal’s (2008) description of epenthesis as the insertion of a sound to facilitate pronunciation. The data consist of Indonesian words containing illegal initial consonant clusters, alongside recordings from four native speakers whose pronunciations were analyzed auditorily. The generative phonology analysis reveals that vowel insertion functions as a systematic repair strategy triggered by clusters such as /st-/, /sp-/, /sk-/, and /sr-/, which violate Indonesian phonotactic constraints. The phonetic findings support this structure-driven analysis: all speakers consistently inserted a mid vowel—realized as [e] or [ə]—in the predicted environments, confirming the rule’s empirical validity. Taken together, the structural predictions and phonetic evidence demonstrate that Indonesian vowel insertion is both theoretically motivated and phonetically realized. The study contributes to the understanding of Indonesian phonology by showing how abstract phonological rules interact with actual speech production to maintain syllable well-formedness.

Abstract

This study investigates morphological processes, specifically clipping and borrowing in the Minangkabau traditional song Ayam Den Lapeh. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study identifies fifteen clipping forms and one borrowing. The analysis follows a structured sequence: research purpose, methodology, key findings, and implications. Findings reveal systematic morphological reduction aligned with Minangkabau phonotactic preferences, including the avoidance of consonant clusters and preference for open syllables. The borrowing biaro, originating from Sanskrit vihāra, reflects early cultural contact in the Malayic region. These results contribute to understanding morphological tendencies in oral traditions and support broader comparative studies of Malayic and Austronesian morphology

Abstract

Headlines represent one of the most condensed forms of media discourse, requiring journalists to communicate complex events with minimal linguistic resources. To achieve brevity and impact, headlines frequently employ polysemous verbs whose meanings must be inferred rapidly and accurately despite limited context. This study investigates how thematic organization, within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), functions as a pragmatic mechanism that constrains the interpretation of polysemous expressions in English online news headlines. Using a qualitative descriptive design, thirty headlines from BBC News, The Guardian, and CNN International (January-February 2025) were analyzed through theme–rheme structure, lexical semantics, and Relevance Theory. The findings reveal a highly consistent pattern: 26 of the 30 headlines (86.7%) positioned polysemous verbs in the rheme, while the theme activated domain-specific frames economic, political, environmental, or technological that guided readers toward the intended meaning. These results demonstrate that thematic framing systematically reduces ambiguity and supports relevance driven interpretation in contexts with minimal co text. This study contributes to SFL by providing empirical evidence that the theme is not only a textual point of departure but also a meaning constraining device that shapes semantic interpretation, and it extends Relevance Theory by showing how thematic cues narrow inferential space and lower processing effort. Practically, the findings offer implications for media literacy and journalism, as recognizing how themes guide interpretation can help readers identify framing strategies in digital news and support journalists in managing potential ambiguity while maintaining communicative economy.

Abstract

Prosodic features such as intonation, duration, and intensity play a crucial role in spoken communication and are often influenced by a speaker’s first language when using a second language. This study aims to acoustically compare the production of an English yes/no question by a native British English speaker and a Javanese speaker to examine potential prosodic transfer effects. The data consisted of one controlled utterance, “Do you like noodles?”, produced by two female speakers (n = 2), both aged 25, to minimize biological variation in pitch range and voice quality. The recordings were elicited in a quiet environment and analyzed using Praat. The analysis focused on three acoustic parameters: fundamental frequency (F0) to represent intonation, intensity (in decibels), and total utterance duration (in seconds). Acoustic measurements were taken at the beginning and end of the utterance, and the results were compared descriptively. The findings show that the native English speaker produced a stable rising intonation pattern with increased intensity toward the end of the utterance and a shorter duration, which aligns with typical English yes/no question prosody. In contrast, the Javanese speaker exhibited a wider pitch range, decreasing intensity, and a slightly longer duration, suggesting the influence of Javanese prosodic patterns on English speech production. Although no statistical testing was conducted due to the limited sample size, the acoustic comparison provides preliminary insights into individual level prosodic variation. Pedagogically, the study highlights the usefulness of Praat as a visual and analytical tool to raise learners’ awareness of English intonation patterns and prosodic differences in second language pronunciation.
