Abstract

This study aims to improve the early reading skills of children with mild intellectual disabilities in Grade III at SLB Asuhan Kasih in Kupang City through the use of big books. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a quantitative approach based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which includes the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research subjects consisted of three students, two females and one male. Data were obtained through observation and early reading tests in each cycle. Data analysis was conducted by comparing the average pretest, posttest cycle I, and posttest cycle II scores to see the changes in ability at each stage. The results showed a significant increase from the pretest to the posttest in cycle I and cycle II. These findings confirm that big books are effective in helping children with mild intellectual disabilities recognise letters, read syllables, and understand simple words as the basis for early reading skills.

Abstract

The background of this study is that students with mild intellectual disabilities still experience difficulties in recognizing number symbols 1-10. Although they have a normal age, students with intellectual disabilities have a mental age below their actual age, so learning media tailored to their characteristics and mental age is needed in learning. This study aims to improve the ability to recognize number symbols 1-10 through the use of audiovisual media. The method used is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a quantitative descriptive approach based on Kurt Lewin's model, which includes four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 4 students with mild intellectual disabilities in Grade III at SDLB Negeri Kota Radja Kupang. Data were collected through student observation sheets and student learning outcome tests. The research results show an increase in the ability to recognize number symbols from an average of 50% in Cycle I to 75% in Cycle II. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of audiovisual media is proven effective in improving the ability to recognize number symbols 1-10 for students with mild intellectual disabilities in grade III at SLB Negeri Kota Radja Kupang

Abstract

Initial reading is crucial in the learning process, as it is a basic skill every student must possess to progress to advanced reading. Students who lack initial reading skills will struggle to understand various learning materials in class. In reality, many students still lack initial reading skills appropriate to their age. Researchers even found that students in a class as a whole had difficulty with initial reading. The purpose of this study was to determine the difficulties experienced by students in learning initial reading, to identify the factors causing these difficulties, and to determine how teachers address these difficulties so that the learning objectives are optimally achieved. This study used the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method. Data collection techniques used observation sheets, interviews, and document analysis. Participants in this study were three ninth-grade students at the Manekat Niki-Niki State Special Needs School. The results showed that three students in the class had difficulty learning initial reading into syllables, and students had difficulty spelling syllables into words. This difficulty is caused by three factors: physical factors, interest factors, and family factors. Therefore, teachers make efforts to overcome these students' early reading difficulties by inviting students to spell letters while singing, reminding students of the benefits and importance of reading, and contacting parents/guardians to pay more attention to students' reading activities at home.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the ability of students with mild intellectual disabilities to recognise the letters A–Z through the use of letter cards as a visual aid in early reading instruction. The study used a classroom action research (CAR) design, which was carried out in two cycles, each comprising the stages of planning, implementation of actions, observation, and reflection. The research subjects consisted of three students with mild intellectual disabilities in Grade VII at SLB Negeri Manekat Niki-Niki. Data were collected through observation, performance tests, and documentation of learning activities, then analysed descriptively, qualitatively, and quantitatively by comparing the results of the pre-action, cycle I, and cycle II. The results showed a clear improvement in letter recognition skills in all subjects after using the A–Z letter card media, as seen from the increase in scores at each stage of action. These findings show that letter card media effectively help students recognise letter shapes more accurately and consistently, and can be applied as an alternative learning strategy that supports the development of early reading skills for students with mild intellectual disabilities at special needs schools.

Abstract

The problem in this study is the lack of understanding in learning to calculate addition because it is seen during the observation that there are students who still experience deficiencies in remembering the material that has been studied, especially in calculating additions under 10. This study aims to find out whether using abacus media can improve the ability to calculate addition in mild mentally retarded students at SLB Bhakti Luhur Baumata-Kupang, The research method used is Classroom Action Research as a research procedure that produces data in the form of numbers and written words. Data collection techniques in this study are observation interviews, assessments, documentation. The results of this study indicate that there is an increase in learning outcomes of mentally retarded students in cycle I of 40% SS subjects, 45% MF, 50% EG, increasing to 93% SS subjects, 90% MF, 95% EG in cycle II. The results of the study showed that at the end of cycle II, there was an increase in children's learning outcomes of 93%, 90%, 95% with the category of Very Good Development.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using visual media in improving mathematics learning outcomes among seventh-grade autistic students at the Kupang State Special School for Autistic Children. The study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, conducted in two cycles, with a pre-test and post-test design in each cycle. The research subjects consisted of three mildly autistic seventh-grade students. Data collection techniques were carried out through learning outcome tests, observation of learning activities, and documentation, while data analysis was conducted by comparing the pre-test and post-test results in each cycle to see the increase in student learning success. The results showed that the use of visual media was able to gradually improve the mathematics learning success of autistic students. This was indicated by a significant increase in learning outcomes from the pre-test to the post-test in cycle I and a further increase in cycle II. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of visual media is effective in improving the mathematics learning success of seventh-grade autistic students at the Kupang State Special School for Autistic Children.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyse the effectiveness of implementing simple vocational sewing skills learning for mildly mentally disabled students in Grade VII at SLB Benpasi Kefamenanu. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method, which was carried out in two cycles. The research subjects consisted of four students with mild intellectual disabilities. Data collection was carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation, while learning activities were implemented through demonstration, repeated practice (drill), and intensive individual assistance. The learning material focused on simple sewing skills, such as making straight stitches and producing small handicraft products. The results showed a significant improvement from cycle I to cycle II, both in terms of fine motor skills and the level of independence of the students. The students were increasingly able to follow instructions well, showed more consistent neatness in their sewing, and completed tasks more independently and on time. These findings are supported by the teachers' adaptive approach to students' needs and the availability of adequate learning facilities. Thus, simple sewing vocational learning has proven to be effective in increasing the independence and self-confidence of students with mild intellectual disabilities as a life skill.
