Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has significantly increased gadget usage among children, making digital devices a dominant part of their daily activities. While gadgets provide positive benefits as tools for learning and entertainment, uncontrolled usage can lead to digital addiction that affects children’s psychological, social, and behavioral development. Children, whose self-regulation abilities are still maturing and who are easily influenced by external stimuli, represent the group most vulnerable to this form of dependence. Gadget addiction is shaped by multiple factors, including internal motivations such as the need for entertainment or escape from boredom, and external forces such as permissive parenting, insufficient supervision, and social environments that increasingly normalize heavy engagement with digital devices. Furthermore, technological features such as notifications, autoplay mechanisms, and digital reward systems reinforce repetitive usage patterns that are difficult for children to disengage from. The impact of gadget addiction extends beyond emotional disruption and manifests in children’s everyday behaviors. These impacts include reduced face to face interaction, increased passivity, heightened irritability when gadget access is restricted, and decreased awareness of their surroundings. This condition is particularly evident in the context of children living in Jalan Rela a densely populated urban area where excessive gadget use leads to reduced alertness and increased risk when navigating public spaces, including roadways. Such observations highlight the link between uncontrolled gadget use and shifts in children’s adaptive behavior in daily life. Therefore, this study aims to comprehensively analyze the factors contributing to gadget addiction among children and examine its behavioral impacts within the specific context of Jalan Rela. The findings are expected to provide meaningful insights for strengthening preventive efforts, educational strategies, and healthier digital practices within families and communities. Abstrak Perkembangan teknologi digital yang semakin cepat telah mendorong meningkatnya penggunaan gadget pada anak, sehingga perangkat digital kini menjadi bagian dominan dalam aktivitas keseharian mereka. Meskipun gadget memiliki potensi positif sebagai sarana pembelajaran dan hiburan, penggunaan yang tidak terkontrol dapat menimbulkan kecanduan digital yang berdampak pada perkembangan psikologis, sosial, dan perilaku anak. Anak-anak yang masih berada dalam tahap perkembangan regulasi diri serta mudah dipengaruhi oleh stimulus eksternal menjadi kelompok yang paling rentan terhadap kecanduan ini. Fenomena kecanduan gadget dipengaruhi oleh berbagai faktor, mulai dari dorongan internal seperti kebutuhan hiburan dan pelarian dari kebosanan, hingga faktor eksternal seperti pola asuh keluarga yang permisif, lemahnya pengawasan orang tua, serta pengaruh lingkungan sosial yang semakin menormalisasi penggunaan perangkat digital. Kecanduan gadget tidak hanya menyebabkan perubahan pada aspek emosional, tetapi juga berdampak pada perilaku sehari-hari anak. Dampak tersebut terlihat dari berkurangnya interaksi sosial langsung, munculnya perilaku pasif, meningkatnya kecenderungan mudah marah atau gelisah ketika akses gadget dibatasi, serta menurunnya kewaspadaan anak terhadap lingkungan sekitarnya. Kondisi ini semakin terlihat dalam konteks kehidupan anak di Jalan Rela, di mana penggunaan gadget yang berlebihan menyebabkan anak kurang memperhatikan keselamatan diri ketika berada di ruang publik, termasuk area jalan raya. Fenomena ini menunjukkan adanya hubungan antara pola penggunaan gadget yang tidak terkontrol dengan perubahan perilaku adaptif anak dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis secara menyeluruh faktor-faktor penyebab kecanduan gadget pada anak dan mengkaji dampaknya terhadap perilaku mereka di Jalan Rela sebagai representasi lingkungan urban padat penduduk. Temuan penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi penting terhadap upaya pencegahan, edukasi, dan pendampingan penggunaan gadget yang lebih sehat bagi anak di lingkungan keluarga maupun masyarakat. Abstract

Students living in boarding houses in Medan City are faced with social and cultural conditions that are different from their hometowns. These differences require good adjustment skills so that students can adapt socially, academically, and emotionally. One factor that is thought to influence the adjustment process is cultural literacy. This study aims to determine the effect of cultural literacy on the adaptability of migrant students living in boarding houses in Medan City. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The research subjects consisted of 50 migrant students living in boarding houses in Medan City, who were selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through a Google Form-based questionnaire that measured cultural literacy and adaptability. The data obtained were. analyzed using inferential statistical analysis techniques to see the relationship and influence between the two variables. The results of the study indicate that cultural literacy has an influence on the adaptability of migrant students. Students with better cultural literacy tend to have more positive adaptation skills in facing new social and cultural environments. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening cultural literacy as a strategy in helping migrant students adapt to urban environments.
