Abstract

The issue of household waste management, especially organic waste, remains a serious challenge in rural areas. A lack of understanding and skills among the community in managing organic waste leads to waste accumulation, which negatively impacts the environment and public health. Organic waste such as vegetable scraps, fruit peels, and leaves is often discarded improperly or burned. In fact, such waste has great potential to be converted into compost fertilizer that can benefit local agriculture. This activity aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of farmer groups in Pagar Agung Village through food security education and demonstrations on making compost from household waste. The methods included interactive lectures using PowerPoint media and hands-on compost-making practices. A total of 26 participants of various age groups took part in the program. Evaluation was conducted using pre-test and post-test questionnaires, each consisting of 10 true-or-false questions, and an interactive quiz to assess participant engagement. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge after the activity. More than 80% of participants answered most post-test questions correctly, with five questions answered correctly by all participants (100%). Furthermore, there was increased understanding of the link between household waste management and family food security. The educational method applied effectively increased interest and ability in processing organic waste. This activity serves as an effective strategy for community empowerment to create a healthy environment and support sustainable food security.

Abstract

The community service activities carried out aimed to increase environmental knowledge and awareness in efforts to overcome air pollution among elementary school students in Muara Penimbung Village. The series of activities included counseling on the introduction of basic concepts and mitigation of air pollution, distribution of pre-test and post-test questionnaires to measure changes in student knowledge. The results of the activities that have been carried out based on the analysis of pre-test and post-test data obtained an increase in student knowledge of air pollution by 97%. %. The findings of this activity indicate that educational methods are effective in increasing student knowledge and awareness of environmental issues, especially air pollution This activity is expected to be the first step in raising environmental awareness and able to increase the participation of the younger generation in protecting the environment, especially maintaining air quality

Abstract

Abstrak: Sampah masih menjadi salah satu permasalahan kesehatan lingkungan, termasuk di lingkungan sekolah. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa dalam memilah sampah dan memupuk kepedulian terhadap lingkungan. Kegiatan ini dilakukan di mitra Sekolah Dasar Negeri 16 Indralaya Utara. Peserta kegiatan yaitu 62 orang siswa kelas V dengan metode edukasi dan simulasi mengenai permainan edukatif. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi, ditemukan peningkatan pengetahuan siswa yang dilihat dari peningkatan rerata nilainya dari 51,09 menjadi 86,67. Selanjutnya, siswa juga tampak antusias mengikuti rangkaian acara dan ketika simulasi maupun di akhir evaluasi, siswa mampu mempraktikkan pemilahan sampah yang tepat dengan membuang sampah di sekitarnya ke dalam tempat sampah yang tepat. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa edukasi dan simulasi dapat meningkatkan pemahaman dan partisipasi siswa dalam pemilahan sampah dan meningkatkan kepedulian terhadap lingkungan sekitar. Untuk itu, kegiatan ini sebaiknya dilakukan secara berkesinambungan untuk terus meningkatkan derajat kesehatan masyarakat dan melestarikan lingkungan dengan praktik pemilahan sampah yang tepat.Abstract: Waste remains one of the environmental health issues, including in school environments. The purpose of this activity is to increase students' understanding of waste sorting and foster awareness of the environment. This activity was carried out at our partner, SD Negeri 16 Indralaya Utara. The participants were 62 fifth-grade students, and the method used was education and simulation through educational games. Based on the evaluation results, an increase in student knowledge was found, as seen from the increase in their average score from 51.09 to 86.67. Furthermore, the students also appeared enthusiastic about participating in the series of events, and during the simulation and at the end of the evaluation, the students were able to practice proper waste sorting by disposing of the waste around them in the appropriate trash bins. This shows that education and simulation can improve students' understanding and participation in waste sorting and increase their awareness of the surrounding environment. Therefore, this activity should be carried out continuously to continue to improve the health of the community and preserve the environment through proper waste sorting practices.
