Abstract

This study analyzes the construction and deconstruction of the meaning of poverty in the short story collection Alwān min al-Faqr by Islām Ṣādiq through hierarchical binary oppositions and how these structures can be destabilized through Jacques Derrida’s deconstruction. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using close reading and textual note-taking techniques. The main textual source of this study is the short story collection Alwān min al-Faqr, which serves as the corpus of analysis, while secondary sources include scholarly works on deconstruction theory and studies on the representation of poverty in literary discourse. The findings reveal four patterns of binary opposition: physical versus economic poverty, social versus economic poverty, poverty without shelter versus poverty with shelter, and health versus economic poverty. A deconstructive reading shows that these hierarchies are unstable because the text contains internal contradictions that undermine the assumed superiority of one meaning over another. Consequently, poverty in the text emerges as a relational discursive construct open to multiple interpretations and contributes to expanding the application of deconstruction in contemporary Arabic literary studies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of identity and marginalization in Anis Susan’s poem "As-salaam ‘alaikum" using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory. Adopting a qualitative approach with content analysis, this study examines symbols and meanings that reflect identity and marginalization. The poem is the primary data source, while secondary sources include academic references on identity, marginalization, and Peirce’s semiotics. Data collection involves document analysis and identifying words, phrases, and sentences as symbolic elements. These symbols are categorized into three types: (1) Identity Symbols, representing cultural, religious, and ethnic aspects; (2) Marginalization Symbols, highlighting social discrimination and oppression; and (3) Social Criticism Symbols, addressing systemic or ideological issues. The study applies Peirce’s triadic model, analyzing the representamen (symbolic form), object (referenced concept), and interpretant (derived meaning). Findings reveal that the poem employs linguistic and semiotic symbols to reflect a collective identity deeply rooted in cultural and social contexts. Identity is expressed through religious and cultural references, while marginalization appears in language structures conveying victimization and protest. The poem also critiques social injustice through poetic imagery, emphasizing oppression within the existing system

Abstract

This study examines the psychological profile of M. Faisol Fatawi, the author of Qasidah An-Nahdliyyah, using Gordon Allport’s personality theory, with a particular focus on how psychological dimensions are reflected in literary production. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzes narrative data through the framework of traits, habits, and attitudes. The findings reveal that the author’s dominant traits consistency, diligence, and social awareness are systematically manifested in his writing practices and thematic choices. His habits of drawing inspiration from meaningful moments and maintaining humility, along with his reflective and service-oriented attitudes, significantly shape the construction of the text. This study offers a novel contribution by demonstrating the integration of Allport’s psychological framework into the analysis of contemporary Islamic literary works, highlighting how individual personality structures can function as a driving force in ideological and cultural expression. The Qasidah An-Nahdliyyah thus emerges not only as a literary product but also as a medium for articulating the author’s devotion to Nahdlatul Ulama and his intention to inspire broader social engagement.
