Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is an infectious disease transmitted through the bites of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes, with a high case burden in Indonesia, including in South Labuhanbatu Regency. One of the efforts to control DHF is through Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN) using the 3M Plus method, which aims to increase the Mosquito-Free Rate (ABJ) as an indicator of vector control success. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of PSN 3M Plus education on increasing ABJ in the working area of Beringin Jaya Health Center. The method used is quantitative with a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The research sample consisted of 100 households selected according to inclusion criteria, with an initial measurement of the presence of mosquito larvae (pretest), followed by an intervention in the form of 3M Plus PSN education through outreach, mutual cooperation, and cadre assistance, as well as a re-measurement (posttest). The research results showed that before the intervention, mosquito larvae were found in 48% of homes, while 52% were free of larvae. After the intervention, the ABJ increased significantly to 100% with a p-value of 0.0001. These findings demonstrate that 3M Plus PSN education is effective in increasing community awareness and behavior towards dengue prevention, thus it can be used as a sustainable promotional and preventive strategy in vector control.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Dengue fever (DHF) is an infectious disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito and is a global public health problem, especially in tropical countries such as Indonesia. Spikes in DHF cases occur fluctuatively in various regions, including South Labuhanbatu Regency, especially in the Beringin Jaya Health Center working area, which shows an increase in incidence every rainy season. The most effective control effort is through education and community empowerment in mosquito nest eradication (PSN) with the 3M Plus approach. This intervention is optimized if it is carried out through cross-sectoral collaboration involving the government, health workers, and local communities. This study aims to determine the effect of PSN 3M Plus educational intervention on the knowledge, attitudes, and actions of respondents in dengue prevention. The method used was quasi experimental with a one-group pretest-posttest design on 100 respondents selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected through a standardized questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, then analyzed univariately and bivariately using the McNemar Test. The results showed a significant increase in respondents' knowledge after the 3M Plus PSN education intervention, from 45% to 64% (p = 0.013). However, in the attitude variable there was only an increase from 44% to 50% (p = 0.643), and in the action variable from 49% to 53% (p = 0.417), both of which did not show statistically significant differences. The PSN 3M Plus educational intervention was effective in increasing respondents' knowledge, but not strong enough to influence changes in attitudes and actions. A more intensive, sustainable, and participatory educational approach is needed to achieve a more comprehensive behavior change in dengue prevention. Keywords: Education, PSN 3M Plus, Cross-Sectoral.
