Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explore and analyze the concept of civilized human beings (insan adabi) in the Islamic educational thought of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas as a philosophical-pedagogical foundation for formulating an alternative paradigm for contemporary Islamic education. The study uses a qualitative approach with a library research design, examining al-Attas's primary works such as Islam and Secularism (1993), The Concept of Education in Islam (1980), and Prolegomena to the Metaphysics of Islam (1995). Data were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method through three stages: description of al-Attas's concept of human, analysis of epistemological-ontological-axiological foundations, and interpretation of contemporary relevance. The results of the study show that al-Attas' concept of human beings emphasizes the formation of an adabi human being who has a multi-dimensional existential structure (intellectual, spiritual, moral) that is developed integrally through the process of ta'dib instilling adab, developing reason, and forming morals. Adab is defined as the recognition and acknowledgment of the proper place for everything in the hierarchical order of being (maratib al-wujud). The study concludes that al-Attas' concept of human beings offers a holistic and integrative paradigm of Islamic education, capable of responding to the crisis of modern education (secularization, fragmentation, dehumanization) by producing a generation of Muslims who have strong faith, broad knowledge, and noble morals to answer contemporary challenges without losing their Islamic identity.

Abstract

This research examines the interpretation of Quranic verses about calamity (musibah) through a comparative analysis of two prominent Islamic scholars: Shaykh 'Abd al-Qādir al-Jailānī, representing the Sufi-ishāri approach, and Ibn Kathīr, representing the tafsīr bil-ma'tsūr tradition. Using qualitative library research methodology with a comparative (muqārin) method, this study analyzes five key verses: QS. al-Baqarah [2]:156, an-Nisā' [4]:62, asy-Syūrā [42]:30, al-Ḥadīd [57]:22, and at-Taghābun [64]:11. The findings reveal that both scholars agree calamity occurs by Allah's permission and serves as a test of faith, requiring patience and trust in God. However, significant differences emerge: al-Jailānī interprets calamity broadly, encompassing both adversity and prosperity, emphasizing spiritual education (tarbiyah ilāhiyyah) and inner consciousness, while Ibn Kathīr focuses narrowly on adversity as consequences of human sins, grounded in authentic narrations and historical context. This study concludes that both interpretive approaches complement each other, enriching Islamic scholarship and providing Muslims with comprehensive guidance for facing life's trials with proper attitudes rooted in patience (ṣabr), submission (tawakkal), and spiritual growth.

Abstract

Quantitative research requires appropriate data collection techniques and quality research instruments to produce valid and reliable findings. The purpose of this study is to describe various data collection techniques in quantitative research along with the systematic process of developing research instruments that meet psychometric standards. This research uses a literature review method by comprehensively analyzing research methodology literature from various credible academic sources, including research methodology textbooks and indexed scientific journal articles. Data analysis was conducted using content analysis methods with a thematic approach to identify main themes related to data collection techniques and the development of quantitative research instruments. The research results show that quantitative data collection techniques include surveys, experiments, structured observations, and the use of secondary data, where the selection of appropriate techniques must be adjusted to population characteristics, types of information needed, and available resources. Quality research instruments must meet validity criteria that ensure the instrument measures the intended construct and reliability that guarantees measurement consistency. The instrument development process involves systematic stages from conceptual and operational definition of variables, clear item writing, content validation by experts, instrument testing, to psychometric analysis using appropriate statistical techniques. Contemporary challenges in quantitative research include adaptation to digital transformation through online surveys, utilization of big data, handling declining response rates, and ethical considerations regarding privacy and informed consent. This research concludes that the integration of methodological rigor, technological innovation, and ethical sensitivity is key to producing quantitative research that is not only technically valid and reliable, but also socially responsible and capable of making meaningful contributions to the development of knowledge and evidence-based decision making.
