Abstract

Malaria remains a major public health challenge in endemic regions of Indonesia, contributing to high morbidity and reduced community productivity. Limited knowledge, along with inadequate attitudes and preventive practices, continues to hinder effective malaria control. This community service program aimed to strengthen community capacity for malaria prevention through a participatory, empowerment-based educational approach targeting populations at risk in endemic areas. The intervention included structured health education sessions, interactive group discussions, and practical training focused on early recognition of malaria symptoms and household-level prevention strategies. Program effectiveness was evaluated using a pre-test and post-test design to assess changes in knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices before and after the intervention. The findings demonstrated clear improvements across all assessed domains. The mean knowledge score increased substantially from 4.98 ± 2.254 prior to the intervention to 13.76 ± 4.689 afterward. Likewise, the mean score for attitudes and preventive practices improved from 5.02 ± 2.245 to 13.68 ± 4.414 following the educational program. These results indicate that participatory education is effective not only in enhancing community understanding of malaria but also in encouraging positive and measurable changes in preventive behavior. In conclusion, the participatory education program successfully enhanced community engagement in early detection and malaria prevention. By promoting sustainable behavioral change, this approach contributes to ongoing efforts to accelerate malaria elimination in endemic communities.   Abstrak Malaria masih menjadi masalah kesehatan masyarakat utama di daerah endemis Indonesia yang berdampak pada meningkatnya angka kesakitan dan penurunan produktivitas masyarakat. Rendahnya tingkat pengetahuan serta sikap dan tindakan pencegahan masyarakat menjadi salah satu kendala dalam upaya pengendalian malaria. Kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan serta mendorong perubahan sikap dan tindakan nyata masyarakat melalui program edukasi partisipatif berbasis pemberdayaan komunitas. Program dilaksanakan di wilayah endemis malaria dengan melibatkan masyarakat berisiko. Intervensi yang diberikan meliputi penyuluhan terstruktur, diskusi kelompok, dan pelatihan praktis mengenai deteksi dini gejala malaria serta pencegahan berbasis rumah tangga. Evaluasi dilakukan menggunakan metode pre-test dan post-test untuk menilai perubahan pengetahuan serta sikap dan tindakan masyarakat sebelum dan setelah intervensi. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan peningkatan yang jelas pada seluruh aspek yang dinilai. Rerata skor pengetahuan meningkat dari 4,98 ± 2,254 pada pre-test menjadi 13,76 ± 4,689 pada post-test. Selain itu, rerata skor sikap dan tindakan nyata masyarakat juga meningkat dari 5,02 ± 2,245 menjadi 13,68 ± 4,414 setelah pelaksanaan program edukasi. Peningkatan nilai rerata pada kedua aspek tersebut menunjukkan bahwa intervensi edukasi partisipatif mampu memperbaiki pemahaman masyarakat sekaligus mendorong perubahan sikap dan perilaku pencegahan malaria secara nyata. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa program edukasi partisipatif efektif dalam meningkatkan kapasitas masyarakat terkait deteksi dini dan pencegahan malaria. Pendekatan ini tidak hanya meningkatkan pengetahuan, tetapi juga berkontribusi pada perubahan perilaku yang berkelanjutan, sehingga berpotensi mendukung percepatan upaya eliminasi malaria melalui penguatan peran aktif masyarakat di daerah endemis.

Abstract

Students' reading interest at SD Negeri 4 Metro Timur still shows low scores and is one of the important problems in learning. One program developed to address this problem is the School Literacy Movement. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the School Literacy Movement and increased reading interest in second-grade students at SD Negeri 4 Metro Timur. This study used a quantitative approach with an ex post facto design. The research subjects were 88 students. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires and documentation, while data analysis used simple linear regression. The results showed that the relationship between the school literacy movement and increased student reading interest contributed 16.1%. This finding suggests that the implementation of a planned and sustainable school literacy movement can increase reading interest in elementary school students.
