Abstract

The paper analyses the translation of Indonesian poem entitled “Aku” by Chairil Anwar, which is translated by Burton Raffel. The poem was written in 1943 and depicts the struggle of the natives of Indonesia to achieve independence from their colonizer. This paper wants to see how the poem is translated into English by a non-Indonesian who does not have social, cultural, or even historical background like Indonesian people. The focuses of the analysis are in the semantics and syntax as cultural and conceptual phenomena; the works of dynamic, pragmatic, equivalence; and the conveyance of ST message through the translation. Based on the analysis, it is found that the works of dynamic and pragmatic equivalence are needed in translating the poem because they can accommodate flexible relationship between the elements of SL and TL such as social and cultural concepts conveyed or depicted by the poem.

Abstract

Professional identity of English teachers is an important process in which teachers view themselves as a professional based on social views about “good teacher”, studentteacher relationship, and self-view as a professional teacher. Teacher preparation program such as Micro Teaching (MT) and Program Pengalaman Lapangan or PreService Teaching Practice (PTP) influences this process by providing support and opportunities in creating a strong professional identity since they are still in a preservice phase. The different nature between MT (situated) and PTP (concrete) can be challenging to the pre-service teachers (PSTs), especially during the PTP. These challenges are called professional identity tensions and they involve PSTs (as a person and professional) and undesirable situation. This study aimed to identify the professional identity tensions faced by EFL PSTs during their PTP and how they coped up with the tensions. The study employed a qualitative survey design. The results identified six professional identity tensions and two coping strategies from the story of seven EFL PSTs. Those PSTs was indicated either to feel tension or to have experiences that might lead them to tension. Keywords: EFL pre-service teacher; professional identity tension; coping strategy

Abstract

The availability of technological learning media offers easiness in determining relevant learning activities. Moreover, this can also be integrated into the principle of a student-centered learning system which would promote students to be more independent in managing their study. This study investigated the relationship between the video project activity and freshmen’s learning autonomy in the Intermediate Speaking course. Nine students of the English Language Education Study Program of the 2022/2023 batch were involved as the participants of this correlational study. To gather the data, a learner autonomy questionnaire and the result of students’ speaking video project were used. The Pearson Product Moment formula was used to analyze the correlation of the two variables. The findings of this study confirmed possible implications between the correlational of “learning autonomy” and “learning achievement”.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to design a coursebook for teaching English as a university compulsory subject. This research employed a Research and Development study that involves four English lecturers and eighty freshmen as the participants. Interviews and questionnaires were used as instruments to collect the data. The qualitative data were analyzed by using the adapted Miles and Huberman Model. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were analyzed by using a simple percentage analysis. At the end of this research, an English Coursebook, English for Collegian, has been finally completed. This book covers 14 units and each unit consists of seven main parts that accommodate comprehensive learning activities for each meeting. It is expected that this research brings fruitful impacts, especially in accommodating lecturers and students’ needs, improving students’ learning achievement, and boosting lecturers’ motivation to create teaching material.

Abstract

Our world has been transformed dramatically by COVID-19 Pandemic as it affected health, economy, politic, social, education, etc. The aim of this research is discovering students’ reflection toward their personal and academic life during early COVID-19 pandmic situations grounded on three zones, namely fear, learning, and growth zones. This descriptive qualitative survey research used questionnaires to gather the data from 187 freshmen in a university in Palembang. The data were analyzed and interpreted by using a thematic analysis consisting of six steps, namely (1) familiarizing with the data, (2) generating initial codes, (3) searching for themes, (4) reviewing themes, (5) defining and naming themes, and (6) producing the report. The research results show that students reflected on their personal and academic life differently when it was reflected based on the three zones. There were also some factors influencing the reflection, namely the transition between senior high school and university and the typically online learning process demanding autonomous learning. Finally, the research suggests that, alongside the society, students might learn how to move gradually one zone to another in order to overcome this global crisis. Therefore, covid-19 pandemic should be perceived then as a lesson learnt.

Abstract

Translating idiomatic expression has been considered a complex challenge in translation training, particularly for English language learners in Indonesia who must navigate both linguistic and cultural differences between source and target languages. Departing from this issue, this study aims to investigate the strategies employed by English learners of Indonesia in translating idiomatic expressions from Indonesian into English, while also identifying the loss and gain within the translation results. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of (1) Indonesian idiomatic expressions taken from folklore “Malin Kundang” and (2) ten student-produced English translations of the folklore. Content Analysis was employed to analyze the data by applying Baker’s (2018) framework of translation strategies for idioms and Larson’s (1998) concept of loss and gain in translation. The finding shows that there are four strategies employed by English language learners, namely (1) translation by paraphrase, (2) using an idiomatic expression of similar meaning but dissimilar form, (3) translation by omission of entire idiomatic expression, and (4) using an idiomatic expression of similar meaning and form. Among these strategies, translation by paraphrase emerged as the most frequently applied one, implicating that learner may possess sufficient knowledge of Indonesian idiomatic expressions but limited knowledge of their English counterparts. In addition, the cultural loss and compensation are identified as the most prominent phenomena of translation loss and gain in translation, especially the cultural loss. This indicates implementing “translation by paraphrase” most likely leads to successful meaning transfer at the cost of losing cultural nuance. Finally, this research highlights what translation strategies are appropriate for transferring Indonesian idiomatic expressions into English.
