Abstract

Madurese language education faces two major challenges: declining intergenerational language transmission and limited integration of literacy and numeracy into classroom practice. A preliminary needs assessment in three partner schools in Pamekasan Regency identified low teacher competency, limited contextual teaching resources, weak student engagement, and minimal utilization of local cultural assets in learning. To address these challenges, this community engagement program adopted a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving 20 Madurese language teachers, school leaders, researchers, and the Pakem Maddhu community. The program was conducted through four interactive cycles: (1) participatory problem identification and asset mapping; (2) collaborative planning and capacity building; (3) classroom implementation with mentoring and observation; and (4) reflective evaluation to improve teaching practices and learning resources. Local cultural assets, including paribasan, pantun, tembang macapat, and Madurese batik motifs, were integrated into literacy- and numeracy-based learning activities. Program evaluation, using competency tests, questionnaires, classroom observations, and reflective discussions, demonstrated substantial improvements in teacher competency (52.0 to 78.3; p < .001), increased teacher confidence in using digital learning media (85%), and higher student interest in Madurese language learning (38.6% to 72.4%; p = .004). Beyond improving instructional competence, the program strengthened collaboration among teachers, schools, and the local community, resulting in contextual teaching modules, lesson plans, digital learning resources, and a sustainable professional learning network. The program contributes a replicable, community-based empowerment model that integrates Participatory Action Research, local cultural assets, literacy and numeracy integration, and teacher professional development for regional language education.

Abstract

Digitalization and globalization are transforming local cultures into digital spaces while challenging the sustainability of Madurese cultural identity. This study aims to analyze the forms and mechanisms of cultural resilience among the Madurese community in responding to these changes. A qualitative approach with a multiple case study design was employed through in-depth interviews with 24 purposively selected informants. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles et al., involving data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing, with validity ensured through triangulation and member checking. The findings reveal five key dimensions of cultural resilience: technological adaptation, transformation of cultural expressions into digital spaces, strengthening of a culture-based economy, cultural filtering mechanisms, and global expansion of cultural identity. Digitalization functions both as a medium for cultural preservation and as an economic opportunity, guided by religious and customary values. Integrating technology with local culture reinforces cultural sustainability and highlights the importance of community-based empowerment policies.

Abstract

The global environmental crisis has driven the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kementerian Agama RI) in 2025 to integrate ecotheology into the Islamic Religious Education curriculum as a response to the need for developing faith-based ecological awareness at the secondary level. This study aims to analyze the concept of ecotheology in the 2025 Ministry policy, examine strategies for integrating it into Islamic Religious Education (PAI), and identify problems and strategic solutions for Senior High Schools/Islamic Senior High Schools (SMA/MA). The method used is a descriptive-analytical literature study of policy documents, scientific articles, and relevant books. The findings show that ecotheology in the policy is built upon five Islamic principles: Tawhid, the concepts of Khalifah and Amanah, Mizan, the prohibition of israf and the encouragement of ihsan, as well as the recognition of God’s sovereignty over nature. The policy also emphasizes the concept of “social dhikr,” which interprets environmental care as an act of worship. Integration is recommended across five learning domains (Qur’an-Hadith, Creed, Ethics, Fiqh, and the History of Islamic Civilization) and aligned with the P5 Sustainable Lifestyle theme and Local Wisdom. The challenges include issues at the levels of: policy (weak technical guidelines and monitoring), curriculum (implicit material and limited teaching resources), teachers (limited pedagogical competence), students (low awareness and a gap between theory and practice), and schools (minimal facilities, limited budgeting, and low community awareness). Strategic solutions include the development of technical guidelines, the establishment of explicit competencies, funding mechanisms and monitoring indicators, module development, continuous teacher training, action-based learning, cross-institutional collaboration, and transformation toward eco-schools/eco-madrasahs.
