Abstract

The paper focuses on the capabilities of students from the Prima Bangsa Institute to identify nouns from descriptive texts sourced from The Jakarta Post edition published on November 1, 2025. The approach of the study was qualitative descriptive, aided by instruments constructed in a multiple-choice tests and interviews. The multiple-choice test has the objective to identify the capabilities of students to identify and differentiate nouns according to their categories, including common nouns, proper nouns, abstract nouns, and collective nouns. Meanwhile, interviews could identify the problems encountered by learners during the learning process. Based on the average scores achieved, students' capabilities to identify nouns reached 56 and were under the category of fairly good. The most easily recognized noun for students was the common noun, while abstract nouns, proper nouns, and collective nouns were not yet fully understood by students. The problems were dominated by less mastery of students on English vocabulary and less mastery of understanding meanings of words based on context, especially when students encounter real texts for the first time. In light of the findings, this study underlines the significance of context-based vocabulary mastery of nouns to increase students' mastery of descriptive texts of the English language.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a major challenge for beginner-level English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, especially when the teaching methods tend to be monotonous. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of the song "Easy" by JVKE as a learning medium to improve the mastery of nouns through the fill-in-the-blank method. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, involving students from the English Education Study Program at Institut Prima Bangsa as participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and song-based vocabulary tests. The results showed that using the song "Easy" was able to increase motivation, reduce learning anxiety, and create a positive attitude toward English learning. The findings indicate that vocabulary acquisition occurred incidentally, where students more easily remembered repetitively appearing vocabulary such as "relationship," "door," and "pride." The fill-in-the-blank method proved effective in increasing students' active engagement and focus on the auditory context. However, the study also noted that while songs significantly aid memory retention, beginner learners still require explicit support from instructors to understand abstract vocabulary. In conclusion, the song "Easy" by JVKE is an effective medium for reinforcing basic vocabulary and student engagement, but its use is most optimal when combined with structured linguistic explanations.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is essential in English language learning because it significantly influences overall language proficiency. However, vocabulary instruction in EFL classrooms is still frequently dominated by conventional and less contextual approaches, which often cause newly learned vocabulary to be easily forgotten. Therefore, more meaningful and engaging learning media are needed, such as English songs. This study explores EFL students’ perceptions of Taylor Swift’s song Opalite in enhancing vocabulary mastery, particularly noun vocabulary. A descriptive qualitative approach was applied, and the data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Before the interviews, students participated in learning activities involving the song Opalite accompanied by a lyrics gap-fill activity. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students perceived the song Opalite positively because it presents vocabulary in meaningful contexts, encourages repeated exposure to vocabulary, and facilitates incidental vocabulary acquisition. In addition, song-based learning was considered effective in increasing learning motivation, creating a more enjoyable classroom atmosphere, and providing additional benefits for the development of listening and pronunciation skills. Therefore, songs are a beneficial learning medium for enhancing vocabulary mastery in higher education.
