Abstract

Abstract This study aims to determine the risk factors for the incidence of low birth weight (LBW) at Dewi Sartika General Hospital, Kendari City. This type of research is quantitative with a cross-sectional approach. The research instrument used was an observation sheet. This research was conducted in May 2024 at Dewi Sartika General Hospital, Kendari City. The population and sample of this study were all babies with low birth weight (LBW) recorded in the medical records or maternity register books at Dewi Sartika General Hospital, Kendari City in 2023, totaling 57 with a total sampling technique. The results of the logistic regression statistical test obtained that the omnibus test of model coefficient showed that 0.001 <0.05, it was concluded that the independent variables had a joint or simultaneous effect on the dependent variable and the Nagelkerke R square value of 0.427 concluded that it contributed an independent effect on the dependent variable together or simultaneously by 42.7%, which means that the age of mothers with high risk, multiparous parity, and preeclampsia has a 42.7-fold risk of low birth weight babies. Abstract

Mining activities contribute significantly to economic development but may also create environmental and public health risks, particularly for women living in communities surrounding mining areas. This study aimed to analyze the impact of mining activities on women’s reproductive health in communities surrounding mining areas in South Konawe Regency. A mixed-methods design was employed by integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. The quantitative component involved 80 women of reproductive age selected through purposive sampling, while the qualitative component involved 12 key informants. Quantitative data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive and bivariate analysis with SPSS version 25. Qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions and analyzed using NVivo 15. The findings showed that 51.2% of respondents perceived mining activities as high, while 13.8% reported reproductive health problems, including irregular menstruation, chronic vaginal discharge, and reduced fertility. In addition, 92.5% of respondents experienced difficulties in accessing healthcare services. Qualitative findings revealed that environmental exposure, limited healthcare access, low risk perception, socioeconomic vulnerability, and limited government and corporate interventions contributed to reproductive health risks. The study implies that protecting women’s health in mining areas requires integrated and cross-sectoral interventions through strengthened primary healthcare services, environmental and reproductive health education, risk communication, and targeted corporate social responsibility programs.
