Abstract

The quick growth of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized education systems throughout the world, posing fresh challenges for traditional Islamic educational institutions, notably pesantren in Indonesia. This research explores the resilience of Islamic education in pesantren and examines how these schools uphold the genuineness of religious knowledge, values, and learning traditions in the face of technological change. This study uses a qualitative library research technique and critical content analysis to determine that pesantren resilience is built upon three fundamental pillars: (1) cultural resilience through the preservation of classical Islamic scholarship (turāth), sanad-based knowledge transmission, and adab; (2) pedagogical resilience through embodied learning models such as halaqah, talaqqī, sorogan, and role-modeling (uswah); and (3) institutional resilience through selective and value-based adaptation of digital technologies without compromising core identity. Although AI improves administrative efficiency and accessibility, it cannot replicate the experiential knowledge, individual mentoring, or moral and spiritual authority that are at the heart of pesantren instruction. This research presents a techno-moderate pesantren model that combines technological advancement with the preservation of Islamic scholarly authenticity.

Abstract

This study aims to conceptually examine and formulate the integration of ecoliteracy and environmental fiqh as a theoretical foundation for transforming students’ awareness toward sustainability within pesantren. Employing a qualitative library research approach with comparative content analysis, the study reviews key literature on the dimensions of ecoliteracy, principles of environmental fiqh grounded in ḥifẓ al-bi’ah and the concept of amanah, as well as empirical findings from studies on Green Pesantren practices in Indonesia. The findings indicate that ecoliteracy provides a scientific and methodological framework for understanding ecological systems and developing practical ecological skills, while environmental fiqh functions as a normative foundation and a source of theological motivation that strengthens the internalization of environmental values among santri. The integration of these approaches results in an Ecological–Theological Awareness Transformation Model that explains the transformation of ecological awareness through cognitive, affective, and conative dimensions, thereby fostering sustainable behavior rooted not merely in structural compliance but in moral and spiritual consciousness. The primary contribution of this study lies in articulating the concept of a Sustainable Green Pesantren that harmonizes ecological science with Islamic spiritual values as a foundation for sustainable environmental education in pesantren.

Abstract

Kyai is the central leader who plays a dominant and strategic role in the management and sustainability of Islamic boarding schools. As the highest authority, the kyai becomes the main reference in organizing educational, religious, and social activities within the pesantren environment. The continuity and development of an Islamic boarding school are highly dependent on the leadership of the kyai, particularly in shaping the character of the santri. Pesantren are inherently recognized as character-forming institutions, where values such as discipline, responsibility, and moral conduct are cultivated through daily life and structured guidance. Therefore, strong direction and guidance from the kyai are essential in the character development process. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the kyai, ustadz, ustadzah, community members, and santri at Pondok Pesantren Sunan Bonang Mojojejer, Mojowarno, Jombang. The findings indicate that the kyai’s leadership in shaping santri character is characterized by strong charisma combined with a democratic leadership style modeled after the leadership of Prophet Muhammad SAW. As a result, santri at Pondok Pesantren Sunan Bonang demonstrate key character traits, including discipline, independence, tolerance, and responsibility. Supporting factors include the kyai’s efforts to improve facilities and learning resources, while limitations remain related to infrastructure development.
