Abstract

This study aims to analyze the degree of air superiority, a strategic concept thatplays a central role in the planning and implementation of modern air operations. This termrefers to the degree of control of an air force over a specific area that allows the execution ofmissions without significant interference from opposing air forces. In general, the degree of airsuperiority is classified into three categories: air parity, air superiority, and air supremacy, eachof which indicates a different degree of dominance over potential enemy air threats. Airdominance is a strategic prerequisite that determines the outcome of modern conflicts. Theconcept of degree of superiority evolves along with changes in technology, doctrine, and thecomplexity of global geopolitics. In the context of air operations, achieving degree of airsuperiority is influenced by various factors, including technological capabilities, theeffectiveness of air defense systems, information mastery, and the efficiency of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, reconnaissance, and surveillance (C4ISR)systems. The interaction of these factors contributes to the success of joint operations and theability to maintain long-term air dominance. Effective air superiority also directly impacts thefreedom of action of one's own forces in conducting cross-service operations. Acomprehensive understanding of the degree of air superiority is a key factor in strategicdecision-making at the operational level. Integration of technological capabilities, informationsuperiority, and cross-service coordination is necessary to achieve sustainable air dominance. Therefore, analyzing the degree of air superiority is not only crucial for tactical purposes butalso serves as the basis for developing comprehensive air defense doctrine and strategy. Thisarticle discusses the theoretical framework in depth, the factors influencing its achievement, and presents case studies from various conflicts ranging from World War II to potential conflictsin the Indo-Pacific. This study confirms that successfully achieving air superiority depends notonly on air power alone, but also on multi-domain integration, defense industry readiness, andpolitical and diplomatic support.

Abstract

Air policing serves as a critical mechanism for maintaining airspace integrity within nations or alliances, directly contributing to air superiority in military defense contexts. This paper analyzes the role of air policing in establishing and sustaining air dominance, focusing on the NATO Air Policing case study. Employing qualitative and quantitative approaches, including literature review, historical data, statistical tables, and graphs, we explore how air policing functions as deterrence, rapid response, and a foundation for broader military operations. The NATO case since 2004 demonstrates over 300 annual interceptions in recent periods, reinforcing alliance solidarity and preventing conflict escalation. In-depth analysis, enhanced by Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) for prioritizing factors, Monte Carlo simulations for risk assessment, and relevant theories such as deterrence theory and air power theory, reveals air policing as a strategic element supporting modern military doctrines where air superiority is prerequisite for ground and naval operations. Findings emphasize the integration of advanced technologies like radar and fifth-generation fighters to enhance effectiveness. This paper concludes that air policing is a foundational pillar for air superiority, with implications for global defense policies in geopolitical tensions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the robustness and risk of military decisions through theapplication of an operations research model based on sensitivity analysis. Conventional militarydecision-making has historically relied on doctrine, experience, and the intuition of commanders. This approach is adaptive, but has limitations in testing the resilience of military decisions tochanges in strategic and operational parameters. The research methodology uses a quantitativeapproach with operations research modeling and sensitivity testing for key parameters such astime, cost, and risk. The main results indicate that military decisions based on operationsresearch models have a more consistent level of robustness than conventional approaches. Thestudy's conclusions confirm that operations research models play an effective role as objectiveand measurable military decision-support systems. This research contributes to strengtheningthe systems and decision science approaches in the study of conventional military decisionmaking.
