Abstract

The Green Severum Heros appendiculatus is a species of freshwater ornamental fish originating from the northern United States. Currently, its aquaculture industry is expanding due to its high economic value, which is expected to contribute to community welfare by creating job opportunities and increasing export value. This study aims to disseminate technical information on Green Severum breeding, as limited data is available on its cultivation management. Technically, this fish can be used as broodstock at 10–14 months of age, with a sex ratio of 1 male to 1 female. During the breeding period, broodstock is fed natural feed, including Tubifex sp. (silk worms) and Lumbricus sp. (earthworms). The spawning process occurs naturally using PVC pipes as spawning substrates. The study results indicate that the average fertilization rate (FR) is 90%, the hatching rate (HR) is 95%, and the survival rate (SR) is 93%.

Abstract

Plankton merupakan komponen penting dalam ekosistem tambak yang berperan sebagai produsen primer, penyangga kualitas air, serta indikator kesuburan perairan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji hubungan dominansi fitoplankton dengan kualitas air, pertumbuhan, dan sintasan udang vaname (Litopenaeus vannamei) pada sistem budidaya intensif tambak komersial sebagai dasar pengelolaan plankton berbasis ekosistem. Penelitian dilaksanakan di tiga unit tambak komersial milik PT Bagja Barokah Sarerea, Kabupaten Tasikmalaya, Jawa Barat, selama satu siklus pemeliharaan. Parameter yang diamati meliputi struktur dan dominansi plankton, kualitas air (suhu, pH, salinitas, oksigen terlarut, kecerahan, COD, amonia, nitrit, dan nitrat), pertumbuhan bobot mutlak, laju pertumbuhan harian, serta sintasan udang. Analisis dominansi plankton dilakukan menggunakan indeks Simpson, sedangkan hubungan antar variabel dianalisis menggunakan uji korelasi Pearson. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komunitas fitoplankton didominasi oleh Chlorophyta dan Cyanophyta dengan pola dominansi yang berbeda antar tambak. Kepadatan fitoplankton memiliki hubungan positif dan signifikan dengan pertumbuhan bobot mutlak udang pada seluruh tambak (p<0,01). Hubungan antara kepadatan fitoplankton dan laju pertumbuhan harian bersifat bervariasi, dipengaruhi oleh stabilitas kualitas air dan tingkat akumulasi bahan organik. Nilai sintasan udang tergolong tinggi (81,55–97,09%), dengan performa terbaik diperoleh pada tambak yang memiliki keseimbangan komunitas plankton dan kualitas air yang lebih stabil. Hasil penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa dominansi plankton yang terkelola dengan baik berperan penting dalam mendukung pertumbuhan dan sintasan udang vaname, serta menegaskan pentingnya pendekatan pengelolaan tambak berbasis ekosistem untuk meningkatkan produktivitas dan keberlanjutan budidaya udang intensif.Plankton plays a crucial role in pond ecosystems as primary producers, regulators of water quality, and indicators of trophic status. This study aims to examine the relationship between phytoplankton dominance and water quality, growth, and survival of Pacific whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in intensive commercial pond culture systems, as a basis for ecosystem-based plankton management. The study was conducted in three commercial shrimp ponds at PT Bagja Barokah Sarerea, Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java, during one production cycle. Observed parameters included plankton community structure and dominance, water quality variables (temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, transparency, COD, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate), absolute weight gain, daily growth rate, and shrimp survival. Plankton dominance was analyzed using Simpson’s dominance index, while relationships among variables were assessed using Pearson correlation analysis. The results showed that the phytoplankton community was predominantly composed of Chlorophyta and Cyanophyta, with different dominance patterns among ponds. Phytoplankton density exhibited a strong and significant positive correlation with shrimp absolute weight gain across all ponds (p<0.01). In contrast, the relationship between phytoplankton density and daily growth rate varied among ponds, reflecting differences in water quality stability and organic matter accumulation. Shrimp survival rates were relatively high (81.55–97.09%), with the best performance observed in ponds characterized by balanced plankton composition and stable water quality. This study concludes that well-managed plankton dominance plays a key role in enhancing shrimp growth and survival, highlighting the importance of ecosystem-based pond management to improve productivity and sustainability in intensive shrimp aquaculture.
