Abstract

This study evaluates the feasibility of integration of the single-bud sugarcane and catfish farming system and the growth rate of both plants and fish. The observation started from September to November 2020. The design used was randomized with one factor. The treatments used were cultivation of single-bud sugarcane in polybags, hydroponic single-bud sugarcane cultivation, integration of single-bud sugarcane-catfish, and catfish cultivation. The results showed that the growth of sugarcane seedlings and the catfish indicate that the integrated cultivation system of sugarcane-catfish is feasible to apply. Such an integration system produces a better number of leaves, stem diameter, leaf area, and root length than the cultivation system of sugarcane seedlings in polybags. The weight of the canopy and the root of sugarcane seedlings in the integration system is also noticeable greater than the sugarcane seedlings cultivated in the polybag. In addition, the rate of catfish growth in the integration system is better than catfish's ordinary cultivation. Keywords: hydroponic, integration farming system, single bud sugarcane planting

Abstract

Pond bottom sediment conditions influence shrimp culture. As benthic organisms, shrimp are mainly on the surface of the pond bottom, so cultivation preparations related to improving sediment quality are essential. Pond bottom practice, such as drying, liming, and fertilizing, is common. However, in bottom pond conditions where total drying cannot be carried out, other treatments are needed, such as the addition of hydrogen peroxide. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of adding hydrogen peroxide in pond sediments on the performance of shrimp growth and water quality. The study was conducted with five doses of hydrogen peroxide (0.25 mL, 0.5 mL, 1 mL, 2 mL) mixed with 350 g of pond soil sediment. Ten shrimps with an average weight of 0,27±0,03 g were put into the rearing container, which had been given pond bottom sediment according to the treatment. The results showed that the 2 mL hydrogen peroxide treatment gave the best results on the growth rate and average weight of Pacific whiteleg shrimp at the end of rearing. Water quality such as pH value, dissolved oxygen, and temperature were not significantly different between treatments. Hydrogen peroxide treatment can improve shrimp growth performance without affecting water quality during rearing.

Abstract

Tilapia cultivation in Nagrak Village has been practiced for a long time as one of the community's sources of income. The aquaculture business is still carried out traditionally such as the use of ground ponds, feeding management that relies on natural feed, packaging that is not in accordance with standards, and fish marketing that only uses the direct selling technique (word of mouth). The obstacles faced by partners are limited knowledge on utilizing the potential of tilapia cultivation and processing, as well as the lack of planning and strategies of product marketing. This community service activity aims to provide insight into the potential for tilapia business development, introduce processed small tilapia fish called crispy baby fish as a healthy snack with economic value, and explain the description of business analysis, good packaging techniques, and online marketing. This activity was carried out with a socialization method or presentation of material to the Family Welfare Empowerment (PKK) group of 35 people. The material presented were introduction to tilapia farming, the business potential of crispy tilapia snacks, an overview of business analysis, and online marketing strategies. The conclusion obtained from community service activities in Nagrak Village is needed for training activities to increase community knowledge and skills on developing the potential of the tilapia business.

Abstract

Highlight Research Cinnamaldehyde for shrimp Dynamics of Vibrio and the correlation with shrimp health status Green and yellow Vibrio bacteria in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas of shrimp Cinnamaldehyde decrease the number of green Vibrio bacteria   Abstract Disease can cause shrimp mortality and high economic losses caused by Vibriosis group. One alternative is using cinnamaldehyde which function as an anti-microbial and inhibit the production of toxins released by microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the administration of cinnamaldehyde on the dynamics of Vibrio bacteria and the health status of Pacific white shrimp fed with cinnamaldehyde-containing feed. This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) consisted of 4 treatments and 3 replications consisting of treatment K, A, B, and C which mean feeding without cinnamaldehyde, feeding containing cinnamaldehyde dose of 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% respectively. Parameters included total bacteria (green and yellow Vibrio) in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas, as well as immune responses parameters, including total hemocyte count (THC), respiratory burst (RB), and phenol-oxidase (PO). All data were tabulated in Microsoft Excel 2016 and all statistical analysis was conducted in the SPSS v.22.0 software with one-way ANOVA followed by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT (P=0.05). The results showed that the administration of cinnamaldehyde influences the dynamics of Vibrio and health status of shrimp. At the beginning and at the end of cinnamaldehyde administration, green and yellow Vibrio bacteria are mostly found in water, intestine, and hepatopancreas. The administration of cinnamaldehyde to Pacific white shrimp can reduce the number of green Vibrio bacteria both in the intestine and hepatopancreas as shown in treatments C and B. Cinnamaldehyde also affected the higher percentage of yellow Vibrio bacteria in treatments C and B compared to control (K). The highest immune responses of THC and RB were produced in treatments A and C compared to K. The decrease of green Vibrio bacteria and increased colonization of yellow Vibrio bacteria were correlated with immune responses. The best treatment in this study is treatment C.

Abstract

Highlight Research Sex reversal for orange-spotted grouper Epinephelus coioides The application of 17α-methyltestosterone induce sex change The stability of sex change need more investigation Abstract The occurance of hermaphrodites in grouper fish causes a scarcity of male parents, so an alternative is needed to accelerate sexchange to male at a young age. The present study was expected to scrutinize the mechanisms of sex-change in fish in the early change process, and whether the testis converted from immature ovary using 17α-methyltestosterone (MT) would recover after the termination of MT treatment. MT-induced sex-change and 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-Aza) were connected as DNA methylation inhibitors to comprehend the alternation of gonadal soma cells. The orange-spotted groupers were used  at the developmental ages and fed a diet containing MT at 50 mg/kg for three months and then a normal diet for a month. In the first week and second week fish injected with 5-Aza intraperitoneally during the MT-oral administration. Most of the fishes in the control group had immature ovaries, but all the females fed with MT, had immature spermatogenesis. However, one month after the withdrawal of MT treatment, the sex of the fish returned to female-like even though the fish have undergone MT-induced masculinization. This outcome demonstrates precocious sex-change from under yearling, orange-spotted grouper utilizing oral MT treatment is impermanent. All the females of 5-aza treatments showed no spermatogenic cells.  In this study, lower growth rates were demonstrated by the MT-treated groups. The impact of this metabolic change was clear after the end of the hormone oral administration since the decreased growth of the groups treated for three months.
