Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of science learning based on volcanic activity data in improving students’ disaster literacy in North Maluku. The study employed a quasi-experimental method using a pretest–posttest control group design. The participants were Grade 10 senior high school students, divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using authentic data on volcanic activity, such as data from Mount Ibu and Mount Dukono, while the control group received conventional instruction. The results revealed a significant improvement in disaster literacy among students in the experimental group, with an N-gain score of 0.68 (moderate–high category), compared to 0.32 (low–moderate category) in the control group. The results of the t-test showed a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between the two groups. Therefore, science learning based on volcanic activity data is effective in enhancing students’ disaster literacy.

Abstract

The relationships among self-regulated learning, creativity, and scientific literacy among senior high school students on Taliabu Island were examined in this study using the Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) approach. A quantitative correlational research design was employed, involving 104 respondents. Data were analyzed using SmartPLS through the evaluation of both the outer and inner models. The findings revealed that all variables were classified within moderate to high categories. However, no significant relationships were found between self-regulated learning and scientific literacy (β = 0.009; p = 0.927), creativity and scientific literacy (β = 0.023; p = 0.814), or self-regulated learning and creativity (β = −0.101; p = 0.307). An R-square value of 0.018 was obtained, indicating a very low predictive capability of the proposed model. The predominance of external factors in shaping scientific literacy in island regions was suggested by these findings.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the concept of deep learning at SMP Negeri 5 Satu Atap Tolonuo based on the perceptions and direct experiences of teachers. The method used was qualitative interviews with six teachers from various subjects. The results of the study show that teachers have understood the essence of deep learning as student-centered learning, emphasizing conceptual understanding, critical thinking, and application in real-life contexts. The implementation was carried out through the design of contextual lesson plans, the use of discussion and problem-based learning methods, and authentic assessments such as projects and portfolios. The main obstacles encountered include limited facilities, diversity in student abilities, and time constraints. The main supporting factors are the support of the principal and collaboration among colleagues. Positive changes were observed in students, such as increased activity, courage to express opinions, and collaboration skills. For optimization, it is necessary to improve teacher training and add supporting facilities.
