Abstract

This article delves into the growing significance of forensic science within criminal investigations and court proceedings, focusing on the pivotal role of forensic chemistry. Forensic chemistry, a sub-discipline of forensic science, is critical in examining physical evidence, encompassing substances like drugs, explosives, and toxic compounds. However, despite the escalating demand for forensic chemists in the job market, the public's awareness and knowledge of forensic chemistry, including university students, remains inadequately explored. Through a questionnaire study, this article presents the results that elucidate the extent of awareness and knowledge regarding forensic chemistry among university students. Additionally, this research examines the attitudes and perceptions of university students towards forensic chemistry education and career opportunities. The implications derived from the findings of this study are profound and have far-reaching consequences, specifically concerning forensic chemistry education, career development, and the enhancement of public comprehension surrounding forensic science.

Abstract

The Chemistry Department constantly works to enhance students' safety awareness through courses, seminars, and symposiums. One of the most critical safety topics is fire safety guidelines. A questionnaire was prepared to assess the students' understanding of fires, and 127 undergraduate and postgraduate students in the Chemistry Department participated.  The questions were prepared and focused on essential topics within the topic of the fire, through which the extent of students' knowledge of the research topic can be accurately determined. The Chemistry Department needs to make more efforts to enhance the safety culture, even though the students' answers can be considered valuable information. The students' suggestions came mainly from their need for more practical practices, firefighting activities, and the implementation of evacuation plans.

Abstract

Laboratory education is a key part of undergraduate chemistry programs, linking theoretical concepts with hands-on practice. In this practical context, separation science remains vital; in fact, extraction methods are crucial for various purposes, including pharmaceutical analysis and environmental surveillance. This study presents an academic and professional analysis of questionnaire data collected from undergraduate students regarding their awareness of chemical laboratory extraction methods. The analysis focuses on interpreting responses to each question, identifying potential correlations among students' understanding of different concepts, and supporting these interpretations with relevant academic references.

Abstract

Forensic chemistry is a rapidly growing sub discipline of forensic science that plays an essential role in criminal investigations through the examination and analysis of physical evidence, including drugs, explosives, and toxic compounds. Despite increasing demand for forensic chemists in the job market, awareness and knowledge of forensic chemistry among university students particularly undergraduate students in chemistry and biotechnology remain insufficiently explored. This study employed a validated questionnaire to investigate the level of awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of 20 undergraduate students at Al-Nahrain University, Iraq, regarding forensic chemistry, DNA analysis, and biotechnology. The results indicated that the majority of participants demonstrated a satisfactory level of awareness: 80% were aware of forensic science, 82% recognized the connection between DNA analysis and forensic science, 84% understood the relationship between DNA and biotechnology, and 91% appreciated the importance of DNA evidence in crime scene investigations. Additionally, 79% expressed interest in pursuing future studies in forensic science. The findings underscore significant educational implications for forensic chemistry curricula, career development pathways, and the broader enhancement of scientific literacy regarding forensic science among university students.
