Abstract

Background. Historical studies of childbirth have largely relied on aggregate statistics and institutional archives, resulting in the marginalization of experiential knowledge and everyday practices of community-based midwives. Such approaches risk reducing complex care systems into depersonalized data, thereby overlooking how knowledge, authority, and maternal agency were constructed in practice. The diary of Martha Ballard offers a rare microhistorical account that captures the lived realities of maternal care in the eighteenth century. Purpose. This study aims to examine how Ballard’s diary reflects patterns of midwifery practice, forms of maternal agency, and modes of knowledge production that challenge dominant institutional and statistical narratives of pre-modern medicine. Method. This study employs a qualitative biographical research design, integrating microhistorical analysis with thematic coding of selected diary entries. Supporting historical sources are used to contextualize findings and enhance interpretive validity. Results. The findings reveal that Ballard’s midwifery practice functioned as a structured and adaptive system of care grounded in experiential knowledge, relational trust, and sustained community engagement. Evidence indicates that midwifery operated effectively despite the absence of formal institutional frameworks. Furthermore, the diary demonstrates that midwives acted not only as healthcare providers but also as producers of knowledge and holders of social authority within their communities. Conclusion. This study highlights the importance of incorporating narrative-based and experiential evidence into historical analysis. It argues that personal documents such as Ballard’s diary provide critical insights into alternative healthcare epistemologies, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of maternal care beyond institutional perspectives.

Abstract

In emerging economies, marginalized communities face significant barriers to entrepreneurship, including limited access to resources, markets, and technology. Creative technology entrepreneurship offers an innovative solution to these challenges, empowering local entrepreneurs to create impactful businesses that drive social change. This study explores the role of creative technologies, such as mobile apps, digital media, and virtual reality, in enhancing community-based entrepreneurship and fostering inclusive development. The research aims to understand how these technologies enable marginalized entrepreneurs to overcome barriers, increase market access, and create sustainable business models. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative case studies and quantitative surveys to assess the impact of technology adoption on business performance and social outcomes. The findings reveal that entrepreneurs who integrated creative technologies into their businesses saw significant improvements in customer engagement, market reach, and operational efficiency. Furthermore, social capital and local community networks played a crucial role in supporting technology adoption and fostering business success. The study concludes that creative technology entrepreneurship is a key driver of inclusive development, offering a pathway for marginalized communities to participate in the digital economy. These findings suggest that policymakers and development organizations should support the integration of creative technologies into entrepreneurship programs to promote sustainable economic and social growth.

Abstract

Climate change is one of the most critical challenges facing global ecosystems, with forest ecosystems being particularly vulnerable to its impacts. The alteration of climate patterns, such as increased temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events, has led to significant disruptions in forest biodiversity, carbon storage, and ecosystem services. This study investigates the effects of climate change on forest ecosystems and explores potential adaptation strategies to mitigate these impacts. The primary objective of this research is to assess the impacts of climate change on forest ecosystems and identify viable adaptation measures to ensure ecosystem resilience. This research employs a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, including field observations, data analysis from climate models, and review of existing literature on forest ecology and climate adaptation strategies. The findings indicate that climate change has led to shifts in species distribution, changes in forest composition, and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases. Additionally, forest degradation and loss of biodiversity have been observed in several regions. Adaptation strategies, such as assisted migration, improved forest management practices, and conservation efforts, have shown potential to enhance the resilience of forest ecosystems. In conclusion, while climate change poses significant threats to forest ecosystems, proactive adaptation strategies can mitigate some of the adverse effects. It is essential to integrate climate change considerations into forest management policies to promote long-term ecosystem sustainability.

Abstract

Rapid advancements in Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) have transformed educational practice by enabling intelligent content generation, personalized learning support, adaptive tutoring, automated feedback, and innovative instructional design. Expanding adoption of these technologies has created substantial opportunities for improving teaching and learning while simultaneously raising concerns regarding academic integrity, ethical governance, information reliability, and the evolving role of educators. This study aimed to examine the future potential of Generative AI for enhancing educational processes by investigating its pedagogical opportunities, instructional effectiveness, and broader implications for teaching and learning. A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was employed, integrating quantitative evidence from learning analytics, academic performance, and standardized educational measures with qualitative data collected through interviews, classroom observations, reflective journals, and institutional document analysis. Findings demonstrated that Generative AI significantly improved academic achievement, learner engagement, creativity, critical thinking, self-regulated learning, instructional effectiveness, and course completion when implemented within well-structured pedagogical environments supported by active educator facilitation. Qualitative evidence further indicated that responsible integration depended on human oversight, ethical guidance, transparent institutional policies, and the development of learners' critical digital literacy. Results suggest that Generative AI functions most effectively as a collaborative pedagogical partner rather than a substitute for educators. Human-centered implementation supported by responsible governance provides a sustainable pathway for educational innovation and future digital transformation across diverse learning environments.

Abstract

Agriculture in the arid regions of South Africa faces major challenges related to water scarcity, which worsens the sustainability of the sector. Water-efficient irrigation technology has emerged as a potential solution to reduce water use and increase agricultural productivity. This study aims to evaluate the impact of water-saving irrigation technology on water use efficiency and crop yields in arid regions of South Africa. Quantitative and qualitative approaches were used in this study, involving 150 farmers as a sample, as well as questionnaire data analysis and in-depth interviews. The results of the study show that this technology is able to increase water use efficiency by up to 30%, increase crop yields by 20%, and reduce average operating costs by 15%. The conclusion of the study is that water-efficient irrigation technology plays an important role in improving the sustainability of agriculture in dry regions and can contribute to food security in South Africa. The adoption of this technology needs to be encouraged more widely through government support and training for farmers.

Abstract

The contamination of industrial wastewater with heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) poses a significant environmental threat, requiring effective removal methods. Traditional water treatment techniques often suffer from inefficiency and environmental harm. This study aims to synthesize and characterize a graphene oxide-chitosan nanocomposite for the efficient adsorption of heavy metals from industrial wastewater. Graphene oxide (GO) was combined with chitosan to form the nanocomposite, which was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The adsorption capacity was evaluated through batch experiments using simulated industrial wastewater, and the effects of pH, contact time, and metal concentration on adsorption were examined. The results showed that the nanocomposite demonstrated excellent adsorption efficiency, with the highest removal rate observed for Pb, followed by Cd and Cr. The adsorption capacity was significantly influenced by pH, with optimal performance at pH 5. The nanocomposite exhibited high metal removal efficiency and stability, indicating its potential as an eco-friendly solution for wastewater treatment. This study highlights the potential of graphene oxide-chitosan nanocomposites as effective adsorbents for heavy metal removal, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional treatment methods.
