Abstract

ABSTRACT Surgical site infections are a common complication in patients after surgery. These infections can prolong hospitalization, increase medical costs, and worsen the patient's condition. One way to prevent surgical site infections is through the application of sterile wound care techniques in accordance with standard operating procedures. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of sterile wound care techniques in preventing surgical site infections in postoperative patients. The study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest approach. The study sample consisted of 50 postoperative patients treated in the operating room. Data were collected through observation of surgical site conditions and patient medical records. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. The results showed that patients who received wound care using sterile techniques had a lower incidence of surgical site infections compared to patients who received less optimal wound care techniques. The statistical test showed a p-value of 0.021 (p < 0.05). It was concluded that sterile wound care techniques are effective in preventing surgical site infections in postoperative patients. Abstract

Spinal anesthesia is a regional anesthetic technique widely used in surgical procedures, but it often causes side effects in the form of hypotension due to sympathetic blockade. One way to prevent hypotension is by administering preloading fluids before spinal anesthesia. This study aimed to determine the relationship between preloading fluid administration and increased blood pressure in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia. This study used a quantitative analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 60 patients undergoing spinal anesthesia and was selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through observations of preloading fluid administration and blood pressure measurements before and after spinal anesthesia. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test. The results showed a significant relationship between preloading fluid administration and increased blood pressure in spinal anesthesia patients with a p-value <0.05. It was concluded that preloading fluid administration is associated with stability and increased blood pressure in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia.

Abstract

Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children worldwide. Poor hygiene behaviors, such as coughing without covering the mouth, contribute significantly to the transmission of these infections. Therefore, education on proper coughing etiquette is essential, particularly in school environments. Storytelling is an engaging and age-appropriate approach for delivering health education to children, as it effectively promotes hygiene awareness and self-protective behaviors. This community service activity was conducted using lectures, demonstrations, and storytelling with hand puppets among elementary school children aged 6–7 years at SD Negeri Mojosongo 1 No. 045, Jebres District, Surakarta City, on December 16, 2025. The activity lasted approximately 60 minutes and involved 22 students. Observational findings indicated that all participants were actively engaged throughout the session. All students were able to wear masks correctly and perform proper handwashing techniques. Additionally, most students demonstrated correct mask disposal (68%) and appropriate coughing etiquette (59%). Through this program, children were taught proper coughing techniques using hand puppet storytelling combined with direct demonstrations. The activity increased awareness of coughing etiquette and encouraged the adoption of healthy behaviors in daily life. This program is expected to contribute to reducing the transmission of respiratory infections, promoting healthier lifestyles among children, and supporting overall public health.

Abstract

Abstract Introduction: Pre-operative anxiety and patients' lack of knowledge regarding surgical preparation procedures often hinder the smoothness of anesthesia administration and post-operative recovery. Appropriate health education is necessary to improve patient compliance with pre-surgical protocols, such as fasting and personal hygiene, thereby minimizing the risk of intraoperative complications. Methods: This community service activity took the form of health counseling and the distribution of educational media in the form of a "Ready for Surgery" booklet to 50 patients scheduled for elective surgery at RSUD X. The methods used included interactive lectures, demonstrations of deep breathing relaxation techniques, and evaluation of understanding through pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Results: There was a significant increase in participants' knowledge scores regarding pre-operative preparation, from an average of 45% (pre-test) to 85% (post-test). As many as 90% of participants stated they felt calmer and more confident facing the surgical procedure after receiving the education. Compliance with fasting instructions and personal hygiene also increased drastically compared to historical data prior to the intervention. Discussion: Providing clear, simple, and visual information helps reduce anxiety and improves patients' understanding of the importance of physical preparation. Two-way interaction during the counseling allowed for the clarification of myths circulating in the community regarding surgical preparation. Conclusion: Precise education through a multimedia approach and therapeutic communication effectively increases patients' mental and physical readiness, thereby supporting the smoothness of the surgical process and accelerating the recovery period.. Keywords : Pre-operative Education, Surgical Preparation, Patient Anxiety, Compliance, Community Service Abstrak Pendahuluan: Kecemasan pra-operasi dan ketidaktahuan pasien mengenai prosedur persiapan bedah sering kali menghambat kelancaran tindakan anestesi dan pemulihan pasca-operasi.
