Abstract

Background. The rapid proliferation of emojis as visual symbols in global digital communication has transformed the way meaning, emotion, and grammar are expressed in online discourse. Once viewed merely as decorative icons, emojis have evolved into semiotic units that participate in syntactic and pragmatic structures across languages and cultures. Purpose. This study investigates how emojis contribute to semantic shifts and grammatical innovation in digital interaction, focusing on their function as modifiers, predicates, and discourse markers in written communication. The research aims to analyze the syntactic integration of emojis within linguistic systems and to explore how users employ them to construct meaning beyond traditional textual boundaries. Method. A qualitative linguistic approach combined with corpus-based discourse analysis was utilized to examine 10,000 social media posts collected from multilingual digital platforms, including Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Results. The findings reveal that emojis operate according to emerging syntactic patterns, functioning as replacements for verbs, adjectives, and punctuation while simultaneously encoding affective and contextual information. The study also identifies cross-cultural variations in emoji sequencing that parallel grammatical rules, suggesting the emergence of a visual-syntactic grammar in digital communication. The results demonstrate that emojis are no longer extralinguistic symbols but dynamic components of evolving global language practices. Conclusion. The study concludes that understanding the syntax of emojis provides critical insights into how digital communication fosters linguistic innovation, cultural hybridity, and multimodal literacy in the 21st century.

Abstract

Background. Language plays a pivotal role in shaping political power and influencing public opinion. Through syntax, rhetorical strategies, and discourse structures, political and media discourses manipulate language to persuade, construct ideologies, and reinforce power dynamics. Understanding the linguistic strategies used in these contexts is essential for analyzing how political narratives are constructed and how media discourse frames societal issues. Purpose. This study aims to explore the syntactic and linguistic strategies employed in political and media discourse, focusing on how these strategies serve to exert power, persuade audiences, and reinforce ideological structures. The research seeks to identify common patterns of persuasion and power dynamics within language use and to evaluate their impact on public perception. Method. A qualitative approach is used, with a combination of discourse analysis and syntactic analysis to examine political speeches, media articles, and televised debates. Data is collected from a range of political figures, media outlets, and speeches within the last decade to assess the contemporary use of language as a tool for persuasion and ideological influence. Results. The findings indicate that political and media discourses employ complex syntactic structures, including parallelism, modality, and presupposition, to assert authority and influence audience beliefs. These strategies are closely tied to ideological positioning, with frequent use of inclusive language to consolidate power and exclusive language to marginalize opposition. Conclusion. This research highlights the role of syntax in shaping political and media narratives. Understanding these linguistic strategies allows for a deeper analysis of how power and persuasion function within public discourse, contributing to the manipulation of public opinion and the reinforcement of social and political hierarchies.

Abstract

Background. The erosion of local wisdom and oral traditions in modern education threatens cultural continuity and identity among younger generations. The study explores storytelling as a pedagogical bridge to sustain cultural values through education. Purpose. The research aims to examine how oral history and indigenous narratives can be integrated into formal learning to promote cultural awareness, moral development, and intergenerational connection. Method. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the study employed interviews, classroom observations, and content analysis in selected elementary schools in Central Java and Bali. Teachers, students, and community elders were involved as participants to document and interpret local narratives used in classroom instruction. Results. The findings reveal that storytelling serves as a dynamic learning medium that enhances students’ empathy, creativity, and understanding of local identity. The integration of oral history into the curriculum also strengthens social cohesion by positioning traditional knowledge as a living source of moral and environmental education. Conclusion. The research concludes that incorporating local narratives within pedagogical frameworks revitalizes indigenous wisdom while enriching 21st-century education. The study recommends teacher training and curriculum reform emphasizing community-based storytelling as a tool for sustainable cultural education.
