Abstract

Background. This research explores the intricate relationship between language and the environment by investigating the ecological vocabulary embedded within Indonesian regional languages. The archipelagic nature of Indonesia has fostered immense linguistic and cultural diversity, which includes a sophisticated, locally-grounded understanding of the natural world. However, this traditional ecological knowledge (TEK), encapsulated in unique lexicons, faces erosion due to language shifts and environmental degradation. Purpose. This study aims to conduct a semantic analysis of environmental vocabularies in selected Indonesian regional languages to document and understand the depth of ecological knowledge they contain. Method. Adopting a qualitative approach rooted in ecolinguistics and ethnosemantics, this study collects and analyzes lexical items related to flora, fauna, and natural phenomena. Results. The findings reveal a highly granular and nuanced classification system, reflecting a profound and long-standing interaction between local communities and their specific ecosystems. Conclusion. This research concludes that regional languages are critical reservoirs of ecological wisdom. The preservation of this linguistic diversity is paramount not only for cultural heritage but also for informing contemporary environmental conservation strategies.

Abstract

Background. The rapid proliferation of emojis as visual symbols in global digital communication has transformed the way meaning, emotion, and grammar are expressed in online discourse. Once viewed merely as decorative icons, emojis have evolved into semiotic units that participate in syntactic and pragmatic structures across languages and cultures. Purpose. This study investigates how emojis contribute to semantic shifts and grammatical innovation in digital interaction, focusing on their function as modifiers, predicates, and discourse markers in written communication. The research aims to analyze the syntactic integration of emojis within linguistic systems and to explore how users employ them to construct meaning beyond traditional textual boundaries. Method. A qualitative linguistic approach combined with corpus-based discourse analysis was utilized to examine 10,000 social media posts collected from multilingual digital platforms, including Twitter, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Results. The findings reveal that emojis operate according to emerging syntactic patterns, functioning as replacements for verbs, adjectives, and punctuation while simultaneously encoding affective and contextual information. The study also identifies cross-cultural variations in emoji sequencing that parallel grammatical rules, suggesting the emergence of a visual-syntactic grammar in digital communication. The results demonstrate that emojis are no longer extralinguistic symbols but dynamic components of evolving global language practices. Conclusion. The study concludes that understanding the syntax of emojis provides critical insights into how digital communication fosters linguistic innovation, cultural hybridity, and multimodal literacy in the 21st century.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia faces acute environmental crises, including deforestation and marine pollution, which are often disconnected from public discourse. While policy-based solutions are widely discussed, the potential of local literature as a vehicle for shaping ecological consciousness and fostering environmental ethics remains significantly underexplored in academic research. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the specific ecocritical strategies employed in contemporary Indonesian literary texts and to evaluate their effectiveness in raising environmental awareness and critiquing anthropocentric paradigms. Methods: An ecocritical textual analysis was employed as the primary research method. The study analyzed a purposive selection of prominent Indonesian novels and short stories published post-2000 that explicitly engage with themes of ecological degradation, local wisdom (kearifan lokal), and human-nature relationships. Results: The analysis reveals that these texts utilize distinct narrative techniques such as adopting non-human perspectives, invoking indigenous ecological knowledge, and portraying visceral environmental disasters to cultivate empathy. These strategies effectively translate complex ecological data into relatable affective experiences, challenging developmentalist narratives. Conclusion: Contemporary Indonesian literature functions as a vital and potent medium for environmental advocacy. By grounding ecological crises in local cultural contexts, these texts bypass defensive skepticism and successfully foster a critical environmental awareness that policy-making and scientific data alone often fail to achieve.
