Abstract

Snails (Gastropods) are aquatic organisms that interact directly with their environment and are sensitive to changes in water quality. Their biological characteristics, such as low mobility and the ability to accumulate pollutants, make them effective bioindicators for detecting water pollution. This study aims to analyze the role of snails as bioindicators of water pollution using a literature review method based on recent national and international scientific references. The results show that snails can indicate water contamination, especially due to heavy metals such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg), through bioaccumulation processes. In addition, changes in the abundance and diversity of snails reflect environmental conditions, where a decrease in population and dominance of certain species indicate polluted waters. Therefore, snails can be effectively used as bioindicators in water pollution biomonitoring. Keywords: bioindicator, snails (Gastropods), soil pollution.

Abstract

Muntingia calabura (kersen) is a tropical plant with high adaptability that reproduces generatively through seeds. This study aimed to determine the generative reproduction process of kersen through natural seed germination and to observe the early growth and adaptive response of the plant after being transplanted into planting media. The method used was observation with a descriptive approach. The study was conducted for approximately 14 days, using young plants resulting from natural germination as the research objects. The procedures included collecting seedlings, transplanting them into planting media, and observing plant growth. The results showed that the plant did not exhibit significant height growth, remaining at approximately 15 cm, and the number of leaves decreased from 8 to 6 due to leaf yellowing and abscission. This condition indicates the occurrence of transplant shock after relocation to new planting media. However, the plant maintained an upright stem, indicating its ability to survive. Therefore, generative reproduction through seeds is the main mechanism of kersen propagation, although early plant growth is strongly influenced by environmental conditions and adaptation processes.

Abstract

The quality of clean water in dense urban settlements often fails to meet health standards, particularly in microbiological aspects. This study aims to analyze the quality of clean water in the Jalan Kali Brantas area, Karang Sukun Village, Mataram City, using the membrane filter method, while simultaneously examining the application of bioethical principles at each stage of the research. A descriptive-analytical approach was employed with purposive sampling from dug wells and other water sources in the area. Laboratory results revealed that the majority of samples contained Escherichia coli bacteria and total coliform counts exceeding the quality standards set by Minister of Health Regulation No. 2 of 2023. The bioethical review affirms that the principles of autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice must be substantively integrated into the design and implementation of environmental health research, rather than treated as mere administrative formalities. This study is expected to encourage improvements in local clean water management policy and serve as a model for ethical and accountable participatory research.

Abstract

Ketapang (Terminalia catappa) is a coastal plant that plays an important role in maintaining the balance of the coastal ecosystem. This study aims to analyze the bioecological characteristics of Terminalia catappa on Kuranji Beach, West Lombok Regency. The method used was direct field observation by measuring environmental parameters such as soil temperature, soil pH, and soil moisture. The results of the study showed that the soil temperature was 35°C, soil pH 6.8, and soil moisture 1.5, indicating hot environmental conditions with low humidity levels. These conditions reflect the characteristics of a coastal ecosystem with limited water and high temperature. Nevertheless, Terminalia catappa is able to adapt well through supportive morphological structures and root systems, allowing it to continue growing in this environment. These findings indicate that Ketapang has a high level of resilience to coastal environmental conditions.

Abstract

Plant collection and preservation are essential steps in botanical studies to support species identification and biodiversity documentation. This study aims to describe the techniques of collecting and preserving teak (Tectona grandis) in Turida Village, Sandubaya District, Mataram City. The method used was a field survey with direct sampling of representative vegetative parts. Preservation was carried out using herbarium techniques, including pressing, drying, and labeling the specimens. The results indicate that proper collection techniques greatly influence specimen quality, particularly in maintaining key morphological characteristics for accurate identification. In addition, appropriate preservation methods enhance specimen durability for long-term use. Therefore, the application of systematic collection and preservation techniques contributes to botanical research and supports sustainable biodiversity conservation efforts.
