Abstract

Contemporary forced migration has generated new ethical and hermeneutical questions for Muslims living as minorities across diverse diasporic settings. This article examines how key Qur'anic migration verses—Q. al-Nisāʾ 4:97–100, al-Ḥajj 22:58–60, and al-ʿAnkabūt 29:56—have been interpreted across classical and modern exegetical traditions. Using a qualitative comparative-hermeneutical method, the study analyzes selected interpretations of al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, Muḥammad ʿAbduh, Rashīd Riḍā, Fazlur Rahman, Yusuf al-Qaradawi, and Quraish Shihab. The analysis focuses on three issues: the historical-normative logic of classical tafsīr, the contextual expansion of modern readings, and the methodological tensions produced by both approaches. The article argues that classical exegesis preserves textual fidelity and historical specificity, yet often remains limited in addressing modern forms of displacement. By contrast, contemporary contextualist readings increase ethical relevance, but may insufficiently define the normative boundaries of interpretation. To address this tension, the article proposes a maqāṣid al-sharīʿah-oriented hermeneutic as a mediating framework. Such an approach enables migration verses to be read in relation to religious freedom, human dignity, protection of life, and civic belonging while remaining anchored in the moral objectives of revelation. The study contributes to Qur'anic hermeneutics, Islamic migration ethics, and contemporary Muslim diaspora studies.

Abstract

Certain prophetic traditions (Hadīth) are still read through a textual-absolutist lens that treats situational speech as timeless law, often generating interpretations that feel ethically troubling or socially unworkable today. This article proposes event contextualization as a practical framework for reinterpreting “problematic” Hadīth by reconstructing the triggering event and its immediate social setting (asbāb al-wurūd), mapping variant transmissions, and then reassessing the report’s normative force in light of Qur’anic moral horizons and maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. Using qualitative textual analysis and contextual hermeneutics—supported by matn and sanad checks—the study examines recurring clusters of narrations frequently invoked in contemporary debates, especially on gender, minority relations, apostasy, and political obedience. The analysis suggests that many interpretive dead-ends arise when context-bound directives are universalized without attending to the occasion, audience, and intent of the Prophet’s instruction. By operationalizing event reconstruction alongside purposive ethical reasoning, the article offers a replicable way to distinguish time-sensitive instructions from transferable moral principles. It argues that this approach strengthens contemporary fiqh al-ḥadīth by reducing interpretive overreach while preserving the Prophetic moral aim.

Abstract

The discourse of gender identity in the interpretation of the Qur'an has become a crucial issue as awareness of gender inequality in Muslim society increases. This phenomenon is notable because traditional interpretations are often patriarchally biased, fueling demands for more inclusive hermeneutics. This study aims to analyze Aḥmad Muṣṭafā al-Marāghī's hermeneutic approach in interpreting gender verses, as well as evaluate his contribution to the discourse on gender equality in Islam. The method employed is a critical analysis of Tafsīr al-Marāghī, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that combines the study of religion, gender, and hermeneutics. The results of the study show that al-Marāghī developed a contextual method of " maqāṣidī interpretation", deconstructing traditional gender narratives and opening up a space for negotiation between sacred texts and social realities. The main findings reveal that gender identity is dynamic in its interpretation, influenced by the interaction of texts, readers, and socio-historical contexts. The contribution of this research lies in enriching modern interpretation theory with an inclusive framework, as well as providing practical recommendations for Islamic education curricula and gender justice policy advocacy.

Abstract

In response to the global challenges of rising intolerance and the politicization of religion, this study explores the hermeneutics of religious freedom in Islam through a comparative analysis of Tafsir al-Manar and Fazlur Rahman’s double movement methodology. Employing a qualitative comparative design grounded in philosophical hermeneutics, the research analyzes primary texts of Tafsir al-Manar and Rahman’s key works, supported by recent secondary literature. The findings indicate that al-Manar adopts a rational-contextualist approach that prioritizes communal protection against colonial-era religious coercion, whereas Rahman articulates universal ethical principles centered on freedom of conscience, resonating with contemporary human rights discourse. This study proposes an integrative hermeneutical model that synthesizes historical consciousness with universal ethics, enabling QS. Al-Baqarah (2:256) is to be interpreted both as a safeguard against forced conversion and as a timeless affirmation of religious freedom. The proposed model offers practical implications for policy development, particularly in the areas of religious freedom advocacy, interfaith dialogue, and inclusive Islamic educational curricula. This research contributes to Qur'anic hermeneutics by bridging traditional exegesis and modern ethical concerns, offering a framework that is both contextually grounded and normatively responsive to pluralistic Muslim societies.
