Abstract

In Indonesia, higher education curriculum policies have undergone many changes, from KBI, KBK, KPT, KPT-KKNI, and now KPT-KKNI-Merdeka Campus. Every change must leave much time-space for understanding, evaluation to the implementation stage. The reality is that many universities cannot adapt quickly. This study aims to determine how the Arabic Teaching Education Program of IAIN Madura breaks down the courses in a curriculum structure and the problems they face in implementing the curriculum, especially in formulating its curriculum structure. This study used a case study approach. The main subject was the curriculum of Arabic Teaching Education Program of IAIN Madura. Data collection methods used were interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique consisted of three activity lines, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the curriculum structure of the Arabic Teaching Education Program of IAIN Madura did not meet the curriculum structure standards as guidelines for curriculum formulation made by the government. The problems in formulating the curriculum structure are 1) Lack of understanding of policymakers on government policies. 2) There is no technical guideline for curriculum development along with the deadline for Study Program Accreditation Renewal. 3) Lack of curriculum development funds.

Abstract

Background: There is an urgency for institutions to develop standardized English proficiency tests for individual use, given the unaffordable and unreachable high-stakes tests for some academic communities. Therefore, the Center for Language Development of IAIN Madura developed EPT (English Proficiency Test) as an individual English test. Nevertheless, no research has provided evidence that EPT has been standardized.Methodology: This quantitative consequential research invited four subject matter experts (SMEs) to judge the objectives of the test items to validate the content validity (CV) with the item-objective congruence (IOC) formula and assess three ways of language proficiency assessment to see how the EPT aligns with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).Findings: The results revealed that the CV and reliability of EPT had been achieved, with the IOC for the three skills measured above 0.75. Internal consistency and stability were also proven to have high reliability coefficients. However, no evidence indicates alignment between EPT and CEFR, as the administrator was found not to follow the three validation frameworks: what is assessed (specification), how performance is interpreted (standardization), and how comparison is made (standard setting). Conclusion: The results conclude that EPT should be improved by aligning it with CEFR. Administrators should conduct a standard-setting study to map EPT scores onto the CEFR and provide the minimum scores (cut scores) needed to enter each targeted CEFR level.Originality: This research fills the knowledge gap by evaluating the EPT’s alignment with CEFR and addressing the need for a standardized and affordable language test in Indonesia.

Abstract

his research aims to determine the relationship between vocabulary mastery and grammar proficiency on the descriptive writing skills of second-grade students at the Islamic High School of Miftahul Qulub in Polagan. This study is a post-facto research involving a sample of 40 students. Data were collected through tests measuring vocabulary and grammar mastery, as well as descriptive writing ability. The data analysis techniques employed include product-moment correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis, with a significance level set at 5%. The findings reveal: (1) a positive and significant relationship between vocabulary mastery and descriptive writing ability, with a correlation coefficient of 0.445; (2) a positive and significant relationship between grammar mastery and descriptive writing ability, with a correlation coefficient of 0.554; (3) a positive and significant relationship between vocabulary and grammar mastery combined on descriptive writing ability, with a value of 12.225 and a regression coefficient of 0.631. This indicates that the higher the students’ mastery of vocabulary and grammar, the better their ability to write descriptive texts. This finding reinforces the theory that language proficiency serves as a crucial foundation in developing productive skills such as writing, and contributes to the development of Arabic writing instruction strategies that emphasize systematic mastery of linguistic elements.
