Abstract

The low level of students’ activeness and learning outcomes are among the many problems found in biology learning. The complexity of biological material, particularly in the coordination system topic, and the use of less innovative learning models are the main factors contributing to these issues. This study aims to determine the effect of applying the game-based learning model assisted by card sort on students’ activeness and learning outcomes in the coordination system topic. This research employed a quasi-experimental method with a Nonequivalent Group Posttest Only Design. The study was conducted at SMAN 7 Pekanbaru. The research samples were class XI.2 (experimental class) and class XI.7 (control class). Data were collected through observation using observation sheets, tests using test sheets, and documentation using documentation guidelines. The results showed that: (1) the average activeness score of students in the experimental class was 63.56 (active), while the average activeness score of students in the control class was only 55.83 (fairly active); (2) the average learning outcome score of students in the experimental class was 84.23 (good), while that of the control class was only 77.26 (fairly good). The hypothesis test results indicated that: (1) there was a highly significant effect of applying the game-based learning model assisted by card sort on students’ learning activeness (sig. value 0.000 < 0.05); and (2) there was a highly significant effect of applying the game-based learning model assisted by card sort on students’ learning outcomes (sig. value 0.000 < 0.05). This study indicates that integrating educational games with card media can enhance students’ activeness and learning outcomes in biology learning, especially for complex topics such as the coordination system. This learning model can be implemented at other educational levels to improve students’ activeness and learning outcomes.

Abstract

The advancement of technology in education demands innovations in learning media that can enhance students’ motivation, interaction, and understanding. In the topic of the Human Immune System, students often struggle to grasp abstract concepts such as immune mechanisms, antigen–antibody interactions, and physiological responses, while learning facilities at school remain limited and lecture-based methods still dominate the learning process. iSpring Suite 11 offers a solution because it enables the development of interactive learning media that can be easily accessed via Android devices, equipped with materials, videos, animations, and quizzes, and can be flexibly distributed through QR Codes. This study aims to produce high-quality Android-based interactive learning media using iSpring Suite 11 and QR Codes for Grade XI students on the Human Immune System topic. The research employed the ADDIE development model with assessment instruments in the form of validation questionnaires and student response questionnaires using a Likert scale. Evaluations were conducted by material experts, media experts, and students during a limited trial stage. The results showed that the developed interactive learning media obtained an average quality score of 3.68, categorized as very good, covering aspects of content feasibility, appearance, interactivity, ease of use, and usefulness in supporting learning. Therefore, the Android-based media using iSpring Suite 11 and QR Codes is classified as having very good quality and is suitable for use in the learning process.

Abstract

The low critical thinking skills of students in biology learning motivated this study. This issue occurs due to several factors, one of which is the use of presentation media that does not adequately support the learning process. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Prezi presentation media on students’ critical thinking skills in the coordination system topic for Grade XI at SMA Negeri 8 Pekanbaru. This study employed a quasi-experimental method with a pretest–posttest control group design. The samples were classes XI.10 and XI.8, selected using purposive sampling. Prezi presentation media was used in the experimental class during the learning process, while the control class used PowerPoint media commonly used by the teacher. The research instruments included a critical thinking skills test and an observation sheet. The results showed that the critical thinking skills of students in the experimental class were higher than those in the control class. The average pretest score of the experimental class was 43.5 compared to 39.3 in the control class, while the average posttest score was 81.8 in the experimental class and 68.8 in the control class. The data obtained were analyzed using an independent sample t-test, resulting in a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000 < 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of Prezi-assisted presentation media has a significant effect on students’ critical thinking skills in the coordination system topic for Grade XI at SMA Negeri 8 Pekanbaru.

Abstract

Twenty-first century science learning requires students to possess critical thinking skills; however, in practice, students still experience difficulties in understanding complex biological concepts, particularly virus material, which is abstract and microscopic in nature. This condition has an impact on the low achievement of critical thinking indicators at SMA Negeri 9 Pekanbaru. This study aims to determine the effect of the Discovery Learning model assisted by electronic modules (e-modules) on students’ critical thinking skills and to describe the improvement of critical thinking ability in each indicator. The research employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design using a pretest–posttest control group design. The research sample consisted of two classes: class X.3 as the experimental group and class X.2 as the control group, each comprising 37 students. The experimental group implemented Discovery Learning assisted by e-modules, while the control group applied Discovery Learning without e-modules. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, and critical thinking observation sheets, and then analyzed using normality tests, homogeneity tests, t-tests, and N-Gain tests. The results showed that the average posttest score of the experimental group (84.46) was in the critical category and higher than that of the control group (69.17). The average N-Gain value of the experimental group was 71.3%, categorized as moderately effective, while the control group achieved 48.7%, categorized as less effective. Hypothesis testing indicated a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, confirming that Discovery Learning assisted by e-modules has a significant effect and is more effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills on virus material.

Abstract

Liquid waste from tofu production and rice washing that is directly discharged without prior treatment causes water pollution that negatively impacts the surrounding environment. Tofu wastewater and rice washing water contain relatively high levels of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), making them suitable for use as raw materials in the production of liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) for celery plants. This study aimed to develop a design of Student Worksheets (LKPD) for the subtopic of Conventional Biotechnology Products for Grade X senior high school through a study on the utilization of LOF in celery using a hydroponic system. This research employed a mixed methods approach with a sequential mixed methods strategy. In the first stage, quantitative research was conducted using an experimental method. The results of the first stage served as the basis for the second stage, which involved a qualitative approach in the form of designing the LKPD for the subtopic of conventional biotechnology products. The experiment used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of five treatments with three replications. The observed parameters included plant height, number of leaves, root length, fresh weight, and dry weight. The results showed that the combination of LOF from tofu wastewater and rice washing water had a significant effect on the growth of celery plants, with the combination treatment of 2.5 liters of tofu wastewater and 2.5 liters of rice washing water identified as the best treatment across all parameters, namely plant height, number of leaves, root length, fresh weight, and dry weight. The research findings were then integrated into the LKPD design and validated by experts as an LKPD that is appropriate for use in teaching conventional biotechnology for Grade X senior high school.
