Abstract

Abstract

This study reconstructs the Islamic educational system in the Aceh Sultanate during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries by employing a non-empirical library research design grounded in critical historiography. The analysis integrates historical, educational, and sociological approaches to examine institutional structures, epistemological foundations, and socio-political relations shaping educational practices. The findings reveal a multilayered system characterized by structured institutional networks, coherent knowledge transmission, and a strong integration between religious authority and political power. Educational practices functioned not only as mechanisms of knowledge dissemination but also as instruments for social reproduction and political legitimation. The curriculum reflected a synthesis of transmitted and rational sciences, supported by dialogical and evaluative pedagogical methods rooted in classical Islamic traditions. Furthermore, the system was embedded within broader socio-economic and intellectual networks, enabling Aceh to emerge as a significant center of Islamic scholarship in Southeast Asia. These findings contribute to contemporary discourse on Islamic education by offering a historically grounded model of integrated, adaptive, and contextually responsive educational systems.

Abstract

This study examines the role of Muhammadiyah as an agent of Islamic education reform in Indonesia through an empirical mixed-methods approach integrating qualitative and quantitative data. The research employs a convergent parallel design to analyze theological foundations of tajdid, institutional dynamics, and the socio-cultural impact of Muhammadiyah’s educational system. Findings reveal that Muhammadiyah successfully integrates religious and general knowledge through a value-based educational framework supported by strong institutional networks and adaptive governance. Quantitative results indicate high levels of perceived effectiveness in character formation, ethical development, and social engagement among learners, while qualitative insights highlight the importance of institutional culture in sustaining reform. The study also identifies Muhammadiyah’s contribution to social empowerment, gender inclusion, and global competitiveness of graduates. These findings suggest that Muhammadiyah represents a sustainable model of progressive Islamic education that combines theological renewal, institutional capacity, and socio-cultural engagement, offering a relevant framework for broader educational reform in Muslim societies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of Islamization in the Indonesian Archipelago by integrating perspectives on origins, mechanisms of dissemination, and patterns of development within a conceptual-historical analytical framework. This study employs a qualitative, literature-based approach by examining various relevant primary and secondary sources in the historiography of Islam in the Indonesian Archipelago. The research findings indicate that the process of Islamization did not originate from a single region but was the result of multi-source interactions involving Arabs, Indians, Persians, and Chinese through global trade networks. The spread of Islam occurred through various channels such as trade, marriage, Sufism, education, art, and politics that interacted synergistically. The patterns of Islamic development across various regions of the Nusantara exhibit variations influenced by local geographical, social, and political conditions, yet share a common adaptive and accommodative character toward local cultures. These findings affirm that Islam in the Nusantara was formed through a dialogical process that produced a moderate and inclusive religious character, relevant within the context of contemporary multicultural societies.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of Islamic educational reform in the context of the role of Nahdlatul Ulama in Indonesia through a qualitative approach based on a literature review. The focus of the study is on the integration of Ahlussunnah wal Jama’ah values into the curriculum, institutional transformation in education, and contributions to religious moderation and deradicalization. The analysis indicates that curriculum reform is achieved by integrating pesantren traditions with modern pedagogical approaches that emphasize digital literacy and critical thinking skills. In terms of institutional aspects, decentralization creates space for local innovation, thereby strengthening governance effectiveness and expanding access to education. The role in religious moderation is realized through the internalization of tolerance values, the strengthening of socio-political literacy, and the utilization of social networks and digital technology. The research findings indicate that the renewal of Islamic education within the NU context is adaptive, integrative, and contextual in response to social and global changes. The contribution of this research lies in strengthening an analytical framework that connects the dimensions of curriculum, institutional structure, and religious moderation into a single dynamic unit of contemporary Islamic education.

Abstract

This study examines the evolution of pesantren curriculum within the context of Dutch colonial educational politics through a historical-critical literature review approach. The research analyzes how pesantren institutions responded to external political pressures while maintaining their religious identity and educational autonomy. The findings reveal that curriculum transformation in pesantren was not merely reactive but constituted a complex process of reconstruction involving selective integration between Islamic traditional knowledge and modern educational elements. Mechanisms such as muadalah, curriculum integration, and the central role of kiai functioned as key drivers in shaping adaptive and context-sensitive curricular models. Furthermore, regional variations demonstrate that pesantren evolution followed diverse trajectories influenced by socio-cultural, institutional, and resource-based factors. These transformations contributed to the emergence of pesantren as hybrid educational institutions capable of bridging religious traditions with national education systems. The study highlights that pesantren curriculum evolution represents a form of epistemological resilience, enabling Islamic education to remain relevant amid changing political and educational landscapes.

Abstract

This study examines Islamic education in South Sulawesi through a historical and sociological perspective using a qualitative library research approach. The analysis integrates historiographical and sociological frameworks to reconstruct the development of Islamic educational institutions and interpret their social implications. Findings indicate that Islamic education evolved from early informal and community-based learning systems into structured institutional forms, reflecting adaptive responses to socio-cultural and intellectual transformations. The study reveals that Islamic education has functioned not only as a medium of religious knowledge transmission but also as a mechanism for shaping social norms, collective identity, and moral values. Furthermore, contemporary developments demonstrate an epistemological shift toward integrative and inclusive educational models that reconcile religious and scientific knowledge. These models emphasize character formation, multicultural awareness, and moderation, positioning Islamic education as a dynamic agent of social change. The research contributes to the academic discourse by offering a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected historical trajectories and social functions of Islamic education in a localized Indonesian context. It highlights the significance of adaptive educational paradigms in sustaining relevance within rapidly changing global environments.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of Islamic education systems in Indonesia during the Japanese occupation (1942–1945) through a historical-critical qualitative approach based on primary and secondary literature sources. The analysis explores institutional restructuring, curricular recontextualization, and the socio-cultural dynamics shaping educational practices under military rule. Findings indicate that Japanese policies imposed administrative control and ideological alignment, leading to structural adjustments within Islamic educational institutions. Simultaneously, curriculum simplification and pedagogical adaptations emerged as strategic responses to maintain the continuity of Islamic knowledge within constrained environments. The study also highlights the pivotal role of local actors, including ulama, santri, and Islamic organizations, in mediating between colonial authority and community needs. Their adaptive strategies fostered resilience, preserved religious identity, and facilitated the transmission of knowledge through flexible social networks. The interaction between external pressure and internal agency generated a dynamic transformation that extended beyond survival, contributing to the formation of a national Islamic education identity. This transitional phase significantly influenced the post-independence integration of Islamic education into the broader national education system.
