Oral health is an important aspect of comprehensive health and plays a significant role in children's growth. If disturbed, this condition can affect children's overall development and physical health, as well as reduce their quality of life. Dental caries in early childhood is a major concern because it reflects the effectiveness of dental health maintenance efforts. The problem in this study is the high percentage of dental caries in group B students at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten, which is likely caused by a lack of knowledge about dental caries, frequent consumption of cariogenic foods, minimal motivation, and irregular access to health services, especially dental health services, at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using the Dental Coloring Book media on changes in knowledge about dental caries among Group B students at Al Barokah Kindergarten in Blega sub-district, Bangkalan district. This research is a quantitative study with a pre-experimental design of the one-group pretest-posttest type, in which a pretest will be given before the intervention and a posttest after the intervention. This study involved 30 respondents from group B of Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan kindergarten. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon test, with a result of sig = 0.000 < 0.05. This means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted, indicating that counselling using the Dental Coloring Book medium was effective in improving the knowledge of Group B students at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten in 2025.

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent oral health problems among preschool children, often linked to inadequate parental understanding of proper dental care. This study addresses the research problem of how maternal knowledge influences the occurrence of dental caries in preschool-aged children at PG/RA Muslimah NU Islamiyah Taman Sidoarjo. The aim was to determine whether maternal knowledge significantly correlates with children’s dental caries status. Using an analytical cross-sectional design, data were collected from 36 mother–child pairs selected through total sampling. Maternal knowledge was assessed using a structured questionnaire, while the children’s dental caries status was examined with a standardized dental health assessment sheet. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test with Fisher’s test as the corrective alternative. The results showed that 47.2% of mothers possessed sufficient knowledge, while 50% of children exhibited low levels of dental caries. A significant relationship was found between maternal knowledge and dental caries prevalence (p = 0.001), indicating that higher maternal knowledge is associated with a lower incidence of caries in preschool children. These findings confirm that mothers play a central role in promoting healthy oral hygiene behaviors and reducing caries risk during early childhood. In conclusion, maternal knowledge exerts a substantial influence on children’s oral health outcomes, highlighting the need for targeted parental education and health promotion programs. Interventions that enhance mothers’ understanding of proper dental hygiene practices may contribute significantly to reducing dental caries prevalence in preschool populations. Strengthening oral health literacy among mothers is therefore recommended as a preventive strategy to support healthier dental development in young children.

Children with visual impairments are particularly vulnerable to poor oral hygiene due to limitations in visual perception and motor coordination, which hinder their ability to perform effective self-care. As a result, parental involvement plays a critical role in maintaining their oral and dental health. However, limited parental knowledge regarding appropriate oral health practices may contribute to inadequate hygiene outcomes in this population. This study aimed to examine the relationship between parents’ knowledge of oral and dental health maintenance and the oral hygiene status of visually impaired students at SMPLB-A and SMALB-A YPAB Surabaya. A descriptive correlational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 24 visually impaired students and their parents, selected through total sampling. Parental knowledge was assessed using a structured and validated questionnaire covering tooth-brushing techniques, appropriate brushing times, and dental care practices. The oral hygiene status of the students was evaluated clinically using the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S). Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test to determine the association between parental knowledge and children’s oral hygiene status. The results revealed that the majority of parents had a moderate level of oral health knowledge (58.3%), while only 33.3% demonstrated high knowledge. None of the students achieved a “good” oral hygiene status; 33.3% were categorized as “fair,” and 66.7% as “poor.” The mean OHI-S score was 3.49, exceeding the national target value of ≤1.2. Statistical analysis showed a strong and significant correlation between parental knowledge and oral hygiene status (ρ = 0.848; p < 0.05). In conclusion, higher parental knowledge of oral and dental health maintenance is strongly associated with better oral hygiene outcomes among visually impaired children. These findings highlight the need for targeted oral health education programs for parents to improve preventive care and oral health status in this vulnerable group.

Gingivitis is one of the most common oral health problems experienced by pregnant women, largely influenced by hormonal fluctuations that occur throughout gestation. These physiological changes increase gingival vascularity, reduce immune response, and heighten sensitivity to plaque accumulation, thereby placing pregnant women at higher risk of developing gingival inflammation. Preliminary data from the Kras Community Health Centre revealed an alarmingly high prevalence of gingivitis, indicating the need for further investigation. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between gestational age and gingivitis status among pregnant women at the Kras Community Health Centre, Kediri Regency. An analytical cross-sectional design was employed involving 75 pregnant women selected through simple random sampling. Gingivitis status was assessed using the Gingival Index, while gestational age was categorized into three trimesters. Data collection was conducted through direct clinical examinations using standardized observation sheets. Spearman’s Rank Correlation Test was used to analyze the association between the two variables. The results showed that most respondents were in the second trimester (45.3%), and the majority presented with moderate gingivitis (62.7%). Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between gestational age and gingivitis status (ρ = 0.000; α = 0.05), with a strong positive correlation coefficient (r = 0.746). These findings indicate that gingivitis severity tends to increase as pregnancy progresses. In conclusion, gestational age is significantly associated with gingival health status among pregnant women, highlighting the importance of integrating periodontal assessment and oral health education into routine antenatal services to prevent worsening gingival conditions and promote maternal well-being.

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition that affects various aspects of health, including dental and oral health. Diabetes and periodontitis are the most prevalent human diseases. Diabetes worsens the periodontal condition, but periodontitis also hampers glycemic control in diabetic patients. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge of oral health maintenance and the incidence of periodontitis among elderly patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) at the Tanah Kalikedinding Health Center, Surabaya. The cross-sectional study involved 46 elderly participants diagnosed with T2DM. Data were collected using a dental and oral health maintenance knowledge questionnaire and the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). The majority of respondents were women (73.9%) aged 60-70 years (91.3%), with most having only a junior high school education (47.8%). Knowledge levels were generally low, with 54.35% of respondents classified as having poor knowledge. Most respondents (80.4%) had severe periodontitis, as indicated by CPITN scores. The Pearson correlation test revealed no significant relationship between knowledge levels and CPITN scores (r = -0.134, p = 0.374), suggesting that knowledge about dental and oral health maintenance does not significantly influence the incidence of periodontitis in this sample. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive interventions to improve dental and oral health among elderly T2DM patients, focusing not only on increasing knowledge but also improving access to dental care and promoting healthy lifestyle practices. These efforts are essential to reducing the prevalence of severe periodontitis in this vulnerable population.
