Abstract

Oral health is an important aspect of comprehensive health and plays a significant role in children's growth. If disturbed, this condition can affect children's overall development and physical health, as well as reduce their quality of life. Dental caries in early childhood is a major concern because it reflects the effectiveness of dental health maintenance efforts. The problem in this study is the high percentage of dental caries in group B students at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten, which is likely caused by a lack of knowledge about dental caries, frequent consumption of cariogenic foods, minimal motivation, and irregular access to health services, especially dental health services, at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using the Dental Coloring Book media on changes in knowledge about dental caries among Group B students at Al Barokah Kindergarten in Blega sub-district, Bangkalan district. This research is a quantitative study with a pre-experimental design of the one-group pretest-posttest type, in which a pretest will be given before the intervention and a posttest after the intervention. This study involved 30 respondents from group B of Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan kindergarten. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon test, with a result of sig = 0.000 < 0.05. This means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted, indicating that counselling using the Dental Coloring Book medium was effective in improving the knowledge of Group B students at Al-Barokah Blega Bangkalan Kindergarten in 2025.

Abstract

Down syndrome children are mentally retarded and most of them have poor oral health and are unable to carry out dental hygiene independently due to cognitive and motor limitations. It was found that 83% of dental hygiene (debris index) was in the moderate category in children with Down syndrome. Efforts to improve dental hygiene can be done by using a modified toothbrush. The aim of the research is to determine the difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome. This type of research is quasi-experimental. The sample size was 30 respondents from children with Down syndrome who were selected using a total sampling technique. The data collection instrument used was the debris index examination sheet. The data analysis techniques used are the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. The results of the Wilcoxon test to see the difference in plaque scores before and after treatment obtained significant results ρ (0.001) < 0.05 in the conventional toothbrush group and the modified handled toothbrush group. The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed ρ (0.000) < 0.05. This value shows that H0 is rejected, so there is a difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome. Conclusions from the research : There is a difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome.

Abstract

ABSTRACT School-age children aged between 6-12 years are one of the groups most vulnerable to experiencing dental and oral health problems. In school-age children, consuming sticky foods tends to stick to their teeth and can cause dental problems. Debris is food waste that contains bacteria. Different from plaque and white material, debris is easier to clean. Chewing fibrous foods is a natural way to control plaque or debris. Fibrous and watery foods such as pineapple and jicama fruit can clean the surface of the teeth by chewing them. because these fruits have the ability to clean teeth which have self-cleaning capabilities. Research Objective: This study aims to determine the difference in the effectiveness of chewing pineapple and jicama fruit on reducing the debris index in class V students at SDN Pagerwojo Sidoarjo. Method: The type of research carried out was Quasi Experimental with a pretest and posttest design. The subjects of this research consisted of 86 class V students at SDN Pagerwojo. Abstract

Dental plaque accumulation is a common oral health problem among pregnant women and is associated with anincreased risk of gingivitis, periodontitis, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. In Bunder Village, Pamekasan, preliminaryobservations showed a high plaque index among pregnant women, highlighting the need for accessible and safe plaque-controlinterventions. Natural mouthwash derived from herbal plants such as betel (Piper betle) and basil (Ocimum basilicum) leaves hasbeen suggested to possess antibacterial and antiplaque properties, yet comparative evidence in pregnant populations remainslimited. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of betel leaf and basil leaf decoctions in reducing dental plaque index amongpregnant women. This quasi-experimental study involved 32 pregnant women selected using Slovin’s formula and randomlyassigned into two equal groups. Each group rinsed with either a boiled betel leaf or basil leaf solution prepared using standardizedprocedures. Plaque index was measured before and after rinsing using the Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) Index. Datanormality was assessed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, while within-group and between-group differences were analyzed using pairedand independent t-tests, respectively. Both betel and basil leaf decoctions significantly reduced plaque index (p < 0.05). The betel leaf group showed a greater mean reduction (Δ = 1.23 ± 0.75) compared to the basil leaf group (Δ = 0.85 ± 0.65), with the between-group comparison indicating a significant difference favoring betel leaf (p = 0.003). In conclusion, both herbal decoctions effectively lowered plaque index among pregnant women; however, betel leaf decoction demonstrated superior antiplaque efficacy. These findings support the potential use of betel leaf decoction as a low-cost, safe, and natural alternative mouthwash in prenataloral health programs. Further studies with longer follow-up and standardized phytochemical assessment are recommended.

Abstract

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic condition that affects various aspects of health, including dental and oral health. Diabetes and periodontitis are the most prevalent human diseases. Diabetes worsens the periodontal condition, but periodontitis also hampers glycemic control in diabetic patients. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between knowledge of oral health maintenance and the incidence of periodontitis among elderly patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) at the Tanah Kalikedinding Health Center, Surabaya. The cross-sectional study involved 46 elderly participants diagnosed with T2DM. Data were collected using a dental and oral health maintenance knowledge questionnaire and the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). The majority of respondents were women (73.9%) aged 60-70 years (91.3%), with most having only a junior high school education (47.8%). Knowledge levels were generally low, with 54.35% of respondents classified as having poor knowledge. Most respondents (80.4%) had severe periodontitis, as indicated by CPITN scores. The Pearson correlation test revealed no significant relationship between knowledge levels and CPITN scores (r = -0.134, p = 0.374), suggesting that knowledge about dental and oral health maintenance does not significantly influence the incidence of periodontitis in this sample. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive interventions to improve dental and oral health among elderly T2DM patients, focusing not only on increasing knowledge but also improving access to dental care and promoting healthy lifestyle practices. These efforts are essential to reducing the prevalence of severe periodontitis in this vulnerable population.

Abstract

Dental caries remains one of the most prevalent oral health problems among preschool children, and inadequate parental knowledge is often identified as a major contributing factor. Despite existing preventive programs, many parents still lack sufficient understanding of proper oral hygiene practices, which may exacerbate caries risk during early childhood. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between parental knowledge of oral health and the incidence of dental caries among preschool children enrolled at PAUD and Kindergarten under the Ar-Rahman Foundation in Jombang. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed involving 39 parents selected through total sampling. Parental knowledge was assessed using a structured questionnaire, while children’s dental caries status was measured using the deft index following WHO guidelines. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that more than half of the parents (51.3%) possessed low knowledge regarding oral health, while the prevalence of dental caries among preschool children remained high. Although descriptive patterns suggested that children of parents with lower knowledge tended to exhibit higher deft scores, statistical results (p = 0.286) indicated no significant association between parental knowledge and dental caries incidence. These findings highlight that knowledge alone may not sufficiently influence caries outcomes without being accompanied by consistent practice, behavioral reinforcement, and adequate access to oral health services. In conclusion, the high prevalence of dental caries observed in this study underscores the need for improved parental education and comprehensive health promotion strategies. Strengthening school-based oral health programs and enhancing parental involvement in preventive practices are essential to reducing the burden of caries among preschool-aged children.
