Abstract

Kata kunci: Propolis, Flavonoid, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Periodontitis Kronis.ABSTRACTBackground: The use of herbal ingredients is increasing because they are able to cure various diseases and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance. One of the popular natural ingredients is propolis. Propolis contains flavonoids which are the most important components that represent approximately 50% of the content of propolis. The flavonoids contained in propolis have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antiviral, and antibacterial effects. Several studies have shown the potential inhibition of flavonoids contained in propolis towards the growth of Porphyromonasgingivalis bacteria. Objective: To explain the potential inhibition of flavonoids in propolis against the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. Method: Analyzing several accredited national journals, textbooks and websites that can be accessed through the Google Scholar database. The sources being used are in English and Indonesian and using keywords such as: propolis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, chronic periodontitis, periodontal disease, flavonoids. The types of references taken are descriptive, research reports, and literature studies published from 2010 – 2021.Conclusion: This review revealed that the flavonoids contained in propolis have antibacterial activity by inhibiting the function of bacterial DNA so that it can inhibit the ability of bacterial replication and translation. The biological activity of flavonoid compounds in propolis against bacteria, works by damaging the cytoplasmic membrane of the bacteria in propolis and has the potential to inhibit the growth of Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria. Keywords: Propolis, Flavonoid, Porphyromonas gingivalis.
