<![CDATA[This research specifically aims to describe relevant strategies, challenges and innovations in developing teachers’ professional competencies. The focus of this research is to compare practices in two educational institutions with very different characteristics, namely Pondok Pesantren Al-Ihsan Boarding School (IBS) and SMP Negeri 23 Pekanbaru. The research method used is a qualitative approach, relying on the main technique of in-depth interviews conducted with a number of teachers from both institutions. The results clearly show the differences in approaches; teachers at Pondok Pesantren IBS tend to develop their competencies through direct practice in the pesantren environment and informal collaboration among fellow teachers, while teachers at SMP Negeri 23 Pekanbaru make more use of formal training programs organized by the education office as well as the Subject Teacher Consultation Forum (MGMP). In addition, this study also uncovered some common challenges faced by teachers, such as heavy administrative burdens and difficulties in adapting to new technologies. In response to these challenges, creative solutions were found to be implemented, for example through participatory observation in the classroom and the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the learning process.
