Abstract

University life constitutes a critical developmental transition in which students, particularly those residing in dormitories, are exposed to multidimensional problems spanning personal, social, academic, and career-related domains. This descriptive quantitative study aimed to map the problems experienced by dormitory students at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) and to draw implications for guidance and counseling services. A total of 315 students residing in the USK dormitory under the KIP-K scholarship scheme were selected through cluster sampling and assessed using the Alat Ungkap Masalah (AUM) UMUM Format 1 instrument, which has established validity (84%) and reliability (71%). Results indicated that 71% of respondents reported experiencing problems, whereas 29% reported no significant difficulties. Among the ten problem components, Career and Work (KDP) was the most dominant (22%), followed by Personal Self (17%), Physical and Health, and Family Relations (16% each), while Courtship and Marriage (2%) was the least reported. These findings underscore career anxiety and uncertainty about future employment as the most pressing concern among dormitory residents, consistent with Super's (1990) life-span career development theory. The study recommends integrating classical guidance, group guidance, seminars and workshops, and individual and group counseling into dormitory support programs. This research contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education) by informing evidence-based student support policies in higher education dormitory settings. Keywords: career development, dormitory students, good health and well-being, guidance and counselling, quality education, student problems
