<![CDATA[Political languages have contributed to the society’s view on the environment in Indonesia, and it has legitimized numerous extractive activities in the name of Green Development. The purpose of this study is to critically read the treatment of the natural environment represented in Prabowo Subianto’s speech for the occasion of Indonesia’s 80th Independence Commemoration Day. Approached with ecolinguistics, the transitivity processes of the clauses from the speech are interpreted with the ecosophy as indicators for a beneficial discourse. The dominant material processes are found to place the government as the main actors, leaving other potential agencies, including elements of the natural environment, as objects, receivers, and a mere setting of happening. Seven values of the ecosophy are not reflected in the gist of the speech. Thus, the paradigm of development is erasing the agency of nature and communities whose lives are directly influenced by the extractive activities that are salient in the text. The speech further frames environmental harm as economic loss of the state instead of an ecological crisis. Thus, the speech belongs to destructive discourse that legitimates growth over environmental limits.]]>
