Abstract

Research on emotions in literary works popular among teenagers often merely identifies various types of emotions, without discussing how emotions function as psychological processes that play a role in individual adjustment, advance the plot, and influence characters. This approach is necessary to address this gap by analyzing “Poetry in Our Heads” by Kith’s, which explores issues crucial to today’s teenagers, such as trauma resulting from loss, feelings of loneliness, and mental health challenges among adolescents. This study applies a literary psychology approach grounded in David Krech’s framework and the interactive narrative analysis formulated by Miles and Huberman, with the aim of examining the types of emotions experienced by the characters as well a the development of emotional dynamics. Data were collected from the text of Kith’s novel “Poetry in Our Heads” through intensive reading and a literature review. This study identified four categories of emotions according to Krech: basic emotions, emotions arising from sensory stimuli, emotions related to self-understanding, and emotions related to interpersonal social interactions. Emotional dynamics show that past traumatic experiences trigger certain ways of acting and behaving to protect oneself, such as suppressing feelings or diverting attention, and this process transforms into recovery from trauma and growth toward emotional maturity through interaction with others. This study contributes to theory and remains relevant for analyzing contemporary popular fiction. Furthermore, this study shifts the understanding of negative emotions in young adult fiction, viewing them not merely as matters of moral value, but rather as cognitive processes that help individuals adaptively develop their self-identity.
